Take it Outside

Take it Outside

Vienna Lager • Partial Mash • 5 gal

GForce

My first stab at a lager saw me deciding to wait for it to get above freezing outside, and then put the fermenter in my garage for a month. Not very scientific, but fairly easy!

  • 1 tsp Irish Moss - boiled 15 minutes (omitted from calculations)

    Irish Moss

A dried red-brown marine algae. Fining agent to remove large proteins. Negatively charged polymer attracts positively charged protein-tannin complexes (extracted from grain husks and hops) during the boil. This action is aided by the clumping of proteins in the boiling process. Irish moss settles to the bottom of the brew kettle with spent hops and hot break material at the end of the boil.

  • White Labs WLP820 Octoberfest/Märzen Lager

    White Labs WLP820 Octoberfest/Märzen Lager

This yeast produces a very malty, bock like style. It does not finish as dry as WLP830. This yeast is much slower in the first generation than WLP830, so we encourage a larger starter to be used the first generation or schedule a longer lagering time.
