Mackeson XXX Stout Clone

Foreign Extra Stout • All Grain • 5 gal

stovepipe

Ok if you want a crowd pleaser this is it! Its a full bodied dark stout with lactose that gives it a mouthful of chocolate with a dry finish. Very tasty! I can't keep it around long because everybody wants it.

Ingredients (All Grain5 gal)

  • 8.5 lbs Maris Otter Pale

    Maris Otter Pale

An English thoroughbred and a favored choice of malt for many brewers. Simpsons' Maris Otter has a rich and nutty flavor and despite its small, berry size has a strong husk. This malt delivers predictable brewhouse performance with modest, yet consistent extracts. Brewers can expect good runoffs with clear wort.

  • 0.75 lbs English Chocolate Malt

    English Chocolate Malt

Dark malt that gives a rich red or brown color and nutty flavor. Use for: Brown ales, porters, some stouts Maintains some malty flavor, not as dark as roasted malt.

  • 1.00 lbs Crystal Malt 60°L

    Crystal Malt 60°L

Sweet caramel flavor, deep golden to red color. For dark amber and brown ales.

  • 0.25 lbs British Black Patent

    British Black Patent

Dry, burnt, chalky character. Use in porters, stouts, brown ales and dark lagers.

  • 0.50 lbs Malto Dextrin

    Malto Dextrin

Adds body and mouthfeel. For all extract beers. Does not ferment.

  • 1.0 lbs Lactose

    Lactose

Adds sweetness and body. Use in sweet or milk stouts.

  • 1.00 oz Nugget - 13.0 AA% pellets; boiled 60 min

    Nugget

This is very bitter and often used in medium to dark ales and lagers. Aroma is quite heavy and herbal.

  • White Labs WLP004 Irish Stout

    White Labs WLP004 Irish Stout

This is the yeast from one of the oldest stout producing breweries in the world. It produces a slight hint of diacetyl, balanced by a light frui|iness and slight dry crispness. Great for Irish ales, stouts, porters, browns, reds and a very interesting pal

When did you add the malto dextrin and lactose? Thanks.

Lactose and Malto Dextrin

I usually add the maltodextrin and lactose during the last 10-15 minutes of the boil. However, both are non-fermentable, so really you could even add them at bottling. I add them during the boil just to ensure that organic contaminants are killed off. Thanks for the comments and questions!

I brewed this and added oatmeal, too

Came out great. My best batch to date. I had tweaked the recipe by adding 1 cup of oatmeal at the beginning the mashing period. End result is very dark, chocolate/coffee flavor. I used approx 3/4 cane sugar for the priming. Plenty of carbonation. I will make this again-absolutely.
