A nice mellow red. Good flavor, came out a little dark, but excellent, nonetheless.

Ingredients (All Grain5 gal)

  • 2 lbs Maris Otter Pale

    Maris Otter Pale

An English thoroughbred and a favored choice of malt for many brewers. Simpsons' Maris Otter has a rich and nutty flavor and despite its small, berry size has a strong husk. This malt delivers predictable brewhouse performance with modest, yet consistent extracts. Brewers can expect good runoffs with clear wort.

  • 6 lbs English 2-row Pale

    English 2-row Pale

All English Ales. Workhorse of British Brewing. Infusion Mash.

  • .25 lbs Roasted Barley

    Roasted Barley

Sweet, grainy, coffee flavor and a red to deep brown color. For porters and stouts.

  • .5 lbs British Crystal 55°L

    British Crystal 55°L

Sweet caramel flavor, adds mouthfeel and head retention. For pale or amber ales.

  • 1 oz Tettnanger - 4.5 AA% whole; boiled 60 min

    Tettnanger

    Mild, slightly spicy. 'Noble'.

  • .5 oz Fuggle - 4.8 AA% whole; boiled 10 min

    Fuggle

Mild. Mainly used for finishing and dry hopping especially pale ales, porters, and stouts. Aroma is mild and pleasant, spicy, and soft.

  • White Labs WLP005 British Ale

    White Labs WLP005 British Ale

This yeast is a little more attenuative than WLP002. Like most English strains, this yeast produces malty beers. Excellent for all English style ales including bitter, pale ale, porter, and brown ale.

Notes

Beer came out very good, but is a little darker than I had hoped. Hit the gravity's on the head. I have a hunch that the color reads on the maris otter pale on beertools are a bit lower than I am getting from the store localy, as this is the second beer I've made using that malt and it has come out darker than expected. Nevertheless, a good beer, with just about the right amount of hoppiness for an irish red style.
