White Labs WLP820 Octoberfest/Märzen Lager
White Labs WLP820 Octoberfest/Märzen Lager
This yeast produces a very malty, bock like style. It does not finish as dry as WLP830. This yeast is much slower in the first generation than WLP830, so we encourage a larger starter to be used the first generation or schedule a longer lagering time.

So far so good

I brewed this yesterday and let me tell you the color is a real pretty oraange. I decided to actually lager it so its not so much a steam beer anymore. Numbers are as follows. Mashed @ 152F foo 60 mins with 7gal I used 6lbs Belgian Pils 2lbs Munich 2lbs Vienna .25lbs Special B .5 Carapils .75 Victory 1oz NZ Pac. Hallertau 5.3aa 1oz Styrian 2aa 1oz Spalt Spalter 1.8aa Boiled for 1.5hrs (first 30 mins was only for clarity then hops were added and 60 min boil began) OG 1.047
In the lager frige

Everything looks good so far. Its bubbling away at about 50-52F.
New Recipe

After several times making this beer and after several years of learning new brewing techniques, the recipe you see here is the result. Some may think I am crazy for the tripple deocotion, but then again, maybe not.
weak

5.5 lbs. German 2-row Pils weak beer
Blind
2009-10-06 11:42pm
You must be blind or retarded because the two row is only there to control the color and add diastatic power. The back bone of the recipe is Munich (17lbs of it). But you would know that and also know that the beer is quite full and over 5% abv since you brewed it right? I thought so.
sorry

This is one of the best Oktoberfest style beers that you will ever have. I have several BJCP friends that have rated this over 40. I have another keg of it that I am going to send off to competitions and I'll report back. It may seem a bit dark for the style but its oh so good. The appearance category is only 3 points anyway!
