Does not taste like Kilkenny
2007-04-24 10:43pm
I brewed this. After I kegged the beer it I found it did not taste like KIlkenny. Has a nice tan head like Kilkenny. I let it sit in the fridge for three weeks and tried it again. Still doesn't taste like Kilkenny. My freinds say the same after sampling. But what every it is.., it is a great tasting beer. A real Irish cream ale. I will brew this again. A good beer!!!! Has to mature at least four week in the fridge to peak great taste.

For those interested, the original recipe was published in A Year Of Beer (pg. 102) by Brewer's Publications, Boulder, CO. The style is often attributed to the famous Smithwick's Ale brewed at the St. Francis Abbey Brewery in Kilkenny, Ireland hence the reference in name. However, my original recipe was actually inspired by The Biddy Early's Red Biddy which is one of my all-time favorite IRA's. Use of Sweet Gale is entirely optional in place of the finishing hops. Anyway you choose to brew it (ale or lager), Penny Red makes a great session beer to offer St. Patrick's Day revelers who might prefer something lighter than the usual stout offerings.
