I've made this British Pale Ale several times and have never been disappointed with the results. Dry hop for added flavor.

Ingredients (Partial Mash5.5 gal)

  • 3 9/16 lbs Maris Otter Pale

    Maris Otter Pale

An English thoroughbred and a favored choice of malt for many brewers. Simpsons' Maris Otter has a rich and nutty flavor and despite its small, berry size has a strong husk. This malt delivers predictable brewhouse performance with modest, yet consistent extracts. Brewers can expect good runoffs with clear wort.

  • .5 lbs Belgian Caravienne

    Belgian Caravienne

Belgian light crystal malt. Used in lighter Abbey or Trappist style ales.

  • 7/8 lbs German Wheat Malt Light

    German Wheat Malt Light

Typical top fermented aroma, produces superb wheat beers.

  • 3 9/16 lbs Dry Light; Muntons

    Dry Light; Muntons

Used as the base for a wide variety of styles of beers, including lager, pale ales, bitters, and export bitters. Contains no colored malts.

  • 3/4 oz Perle - 8.2 AA% pellets; boiled 60 min

    Perle

Used mainly for its minty bittering and good green hop aromas in all non-pilsener lagersand wheats. Aroma is pleasant and slightly spicy

  • 1 3/8 oz Cascade - 5.5 AA% pellets; boiled 15 min

    Cascade

Spicy with citrus notes. Slightly grapefruity.

  • 1 3/8 oz Cascade - 5.5 AA% pellets; boiled 1 min

    Cascade

Spicy with citrus notes. Slightly grapefruity.

  • White Labs WLP017 Whitbread Ale

    White Labs WLP017 Whitbread Ale

Traditional mixed yeast culture. British style character, slightly fruity, with a hint of sulfur production. This yeast can be used for many different beer styles. The most traditional choices would be English style ales including milds, bitters, porters, and English style stouts. North American style ales will also benefit from fermentation with WLP017. The beer will clear easily.

well balanced pale ale

This pale ale is an easy introduction into the mini-mash process. Rather rich tasting, make sure to let this beer age at least 6 weeks if you are bottling. Since I brewed this specific recipe last, I've moved over to all grain brewing and have not really tried this recipe in the all grain process.
