My take on Barley Brown's Turmoil Black IPA. Second time I have made this.

Ingredients (Partial Mash5 gal)

  • 1 lbs German Dark Munich

    German Dark Munich

    Enhances body and aroma. Stout, schwarzbier, brown ale, dark and amber ales.

  • 1 lbs German Wheat Malt Light

    German Wheat Malt Light

    Typical top fermented aroma, produces superb wheat beers.

  • 1 lbs Carafa® TYPE II; Weyermann®

    Carafa® TYPE II; Weyermann®

    German-grown two-row spring barley (2004 harvest). Product Characteristics: Carefully roasted to add coffee-brown color, espresso-like bouquet, dark-beer aroma, and body to finished beer. Produces opaque beer with mild, but noticeable roasted aftertaste. Recommended Quantities: Up to 5% of total grain bill Suitability (beer styles): Lagers: Dunkel, Doppelbock Ales: Dark, Stout, Altbier

  • 4 lbs American 2-row

    American 2-row

    Yields a slightly higher extract than Six Rox brewers Malt. Tends to give a smoother, less grainy flavored beer. Some brewers claim they can detect a significant difference in flavor. Lower protein and will yield a lower color than Six-Row Brewers Malt

  • .5 lbs Crystal Malt 20°L

    Crystal Malt 20°L

    Sweet, mild caramel flavor and a golden color. Use in light lagers and light ales.

  • 3 lbs Dry Light Extract

    Dry Light Extract

    White color, mild flavor. Will produce lagers and Pilseners and can also be used to produce darker beers when used in conjunction with colored malts. Made of pale malt.

  • .5 oz Columbus - 15.0 AA% pellets; boiled 20 min

    Columbus

    Used mainly for bittering with some flavor qualities as well. Aroma is pleasant.

  • .5 oz Chinook - 12.0 AA% pellets; boiled 20 min

    Chinook

    Spicy, Medium to Heavy.Very strong bittering ability used in all American ales and lagers. Aroma is very floral.

  • 1 oz Magnum - 12.0 AA% pellets; boiled 60 min

    Magnum

    Bred in 1980 at Germany’s Hüll Hop Research Center, this high-alpha variety is renowned for its exceptionally large, heavy cones. Hallertauer Magnum delivers excellent yields and, like many Hüll-developed hops, boasts a strong resistance to disease.

  • .5 oz Chinook - 12.0 AA% pellets; boiled 60 min

    Spicy, Medium to Heavy.Very strong bittering ability used in all American ales and lagers. Aroma is very floral.

  • 1 oz Amarillo® - 8.2 AA% pellets; boiled 30 min

    Amarillo®

    Grown in Washington. A newer multi-use hop with a nice citrus-flower bouquet and medium-high acid content suited for bittering. Used in American Ales and IPAs.

  • .5 oz Cascade - 6.0 AA% pellets; boiled 15 min

    Cascade

    Spicy with citrus notes. Slightly grapefruity.

  • .5 oz Cascade - 6.0 AA% pellets; boiled 2 min

    Spicy with citrus notes. Slightly grapefruity.

  • 1 oz Cascade - 6.0 AA% whole; added dry to secondary fermenter

  • 1 tbsp Yeast Nutrient (AKA Fermax) - (omitted from calculations)

    White Labs WLP001 California Ale

    This yeast is famous for its clean flavors, balance and ability to be used in almost any style ale. It accentuates the hop flavors and is extremely versatile.

Notes

Mash @ 155 for 90mins Sparged with 0.5 gallon @ 170 A 1L starter was made 48h prior to pitching 0.5 oz Columbus and 0.5 oz Chinook were added as FWH. For IBU calculations these are listed as 20 min boil time. Option for 1 oz Amarillo plugs for secondary if available
