Tutorial Step 4
Hand holding a thermometer over a pot of water on a wooden surface.

Three gallons of water is added to the brew pot and is heated to 150°F. This is the temperature used to steep the specialty grains we have selected in our recipe.

Person holding a bag of grains near a pot of water on a porch.

The crushed specialty grains are measured out and added to the grain bag. The grain bag allows the brewer to remove the specialty grain husks before the boiling begins. The husks should not be present during the boil because they add off-flavors if boiled.

Hand lowering a bag into a large pot of boiling water on a stove, with two packages on a wooden table nearby.

Allow the grain bag to steep in the 150°F water for 30 minutes. The top of the bag should not be submerged if it is left open.
