Notes
This is actually a partial mash (single step at 155°F for the rye malt) Brewed the day of the big east coast ice storm with Brent. Originally named "Flat Fingered Foamer," as we were listening to Thelonius Monk ... The Crystal 40L is actually a Crisp Crystal 45L... We held 3/4ths of the Alexander's liquid until 15mins left in boil. Actual OG was too high for our target final volume of 3.5 gallons. We upped the water until we hit 1.053. Pitched the yeast at 65°F. Fermenter was in a cool area (60-64F) for 10 days. Racked to secondary -- Not quite as dark as predicted. I wanted a steamer with a bit more bite -- hence the smidgen of rye. Also, I wanted a better cream-style head, so I used some carapils (have had good experience with it.) We'll see!

Racked today. First taste is quite bitter. Notes of grapefruit at first, but they don't linger. Green, obviously, but has a slightly slippery feel and a bit of snap on the finish (Rye?). Still fizzing slowly. SG=1.015 and falling. Quite clear already. Expect to bottle in one week. All in all, has great promise.

Bottled on 3/3. Color looks like a direct hit for Anchor Steam. Tastes a bit sharp -- Maybe the rye hit. Has potential. I neglected to mention that this is actually a partial mash, with a single step infusion for the rye malt at 155°F fo 30 minutes. Stay tuned...
Very Nice...

Opened a bottle last night. The color is a direct hit on Anchor Steam, but thereis some haze. The head is thicker and longer-lasting than a normal Cal Common - A feature I was striving for. The rye aroma is apparent -- no kidding --and adds a slight sharpness. The Northern Brewer hops note comes through loud and clear -- very nice. The beer has a good mouth feel and a lusher presence than the commercial variety. Overall, still a bit young, but very nice.
Getting even better.

this brew is really starting to impress me. It's been a month in the bottle adn it really is coming into its own. Had a couple today and it really is a balanced Steamer.
Family Tasting

Had a family tasting (5 males ages 25 to 68) yesterday (Apr. 7) in a showdown against Anchor Steam. All five picked Thelonius Monk's Ice Storm Steamer! More flavor, better mouthfeel, nice hops bite.
