“The Porter 7 came in second and missed only by a few points. The beer was well received and all the judges comments were ‘it will gain more points with maturity,’ as it was only 12 weeks in the bottle.”—Ray Mills

The ESB (Eastern Suburbs Brewing) shop at Peakhurst in Sydney manufactures and supplies a large range of its own award winning kits and distributes them all over Australia. The outlet also supplies a large range of grains to microbrewers and homebrew supplies accross Australia as it imports a good range of British grains etc.

Every week they have a gathering of some of Australia’s best craftbrewers and they decided to have their first competition. So they invited a few guest judges and had a very successful competition. It’s now going to be an annual event.

The Porter 7 came in second and missed only by a few points. The beer was well received and all judges comments were ‘it will gain more points with maturity,’ as it was only 12 weeks in the bottle.

The previous porter using the same recipe was the overall winner of the competition at the annual Thirroul Seaside festival in Wollongong (south of Sydney).

This beer is well balanced and over the years I have improved the recipe by trial and error. The best thing that came along was the Beertools.com Calculator as this really fine tuned the beer for me. It gave me the ability to easily adjust it to style and see what differences various grains would make.

I believe if most craftbrewers give it a try they will not be disappointed.
