Volume by weight for crushed grains

Post by kabbo »

Hello, I'm planning to build a mash/lauter tun with a round beverage cooler and I am currently shopping for optimal interior dimensions to have a grainbed of 6 to 12 in.

I would like to know how much space (qts) does 1 lb of crushed grain occupy ? Is it something like 3 quarts ? I need to know this to shop for the best cooler to brew 7lbs beers as well as stronger 20 lbs beers. I just don't have spare grains available here to try a lb in a measuring cup... thanks for your help.

Also, could someone tell me how much mash water (proportionnal) you can add in a tun until the water line joins the top of the grainbed ?

Thanks a lot for your answers
