All grain?

Post by caughtinamosh87 »

Looking to finally going all grain! Will a 7 gal cooler work for a full mash? How many lbs of grain could I get into it with sufficent water?

A 7 gallon cooler should be plenty big for 5 gallons of most beers. You should even be able to make 10 gallons of a 1.050 beer with 2 batch sparges.

You should be able to fit 15-17# of grain into a 7 gallon cooler, with enough water for a decent mash, if you sparge. That should allow you to make 5 gallons of a 1.070-1.080 beer pretty easily. Maybe a little lower OG when you first start and haven't optimized things, and a little higher once you work things out and get full efficiency.

5 gallons of a more average gravity beer should be a walk in the park. If you want to make a really big beer, you might just have to settle for 4 gallons instead of 5.

(By the way, I figured all this out using the schedule tool in BeerTools Pro.)

Good luck with all-grain!
