Method for cleaning inside of kegs

Post by Sudsman1 »

Getting ready to clean out a keg that had been nearly empty for a long while, I see there seems ro be a heavy accumulation of crud along the insides of the keg. What is the best way to clean this off without damaging the keg?

The way I clean my kegs is to rinse them out with cold water to get as much of the loose gunk out as I can, then I soak them in a solution of hot water and OxyClean for a few hours. It works very well and I never have to use a brush.

Cleaning Kegs

If you do need a brush, a new toilet brush works well. My personal preference is for the kind that's formed in a loop.

Oxyclean

Post by brewmeisterintng »

I agree that it the way to go. I do have a small toilet brush that I use to get the stuff in the divit at the bottom. It doesn't take long at all. Just thinking about how long it took me to clean and sanitize bottles makes me wonder why I didn't keg sooner. I really dreaded bottling day.

Hot water and 5 Star's PBW + 3 days.

Just let it sit and rinse it out -- done.

What Push said...

5 Star Products rock.

Sidenote - started kegging in my new house and they multiply like rabbits.

I now have 4, 3 full and the the 4th will be filled next weekend to carb by Christmas. Less time packagin = more time brewing.
Cheers,

Timmy

Ingenious idea

Post by billvelek »

I haven't heard of that idea before, and it sounds great. I'll need to remember that for when I finally get into kegging.

Cheers.

Works mint.....in more than 1 way......
when keg empty..remove lid..attach hose....turn upside down ...rinse out..
Than i turn it over, add sterilizer, and fill up through the out tube...again also rinsing...let it sit for 30.min ....turn over to drain out...than on with water....for a final rinse.....Cap/pressurize/tag "cleaned"

What more would one want ???

I'm in the same boat and was wondering of which produces better results, Oxy or PBW?

I tried PBW, let it soak in warm water for a half an hour, didnt do much. Longer soak next time or go with Oxy clean???

Oxyclean is made of one of the 2 ingredients of PBW, so I guess PBW is the stronger cleaner. It has a detergent as well as the percarbonate in Oxyclean.

You may want to try a more concentrated solution if it's not doing it for you. Oxyclean will be cheaper to use at higher concentrations.

i gave it a good scrub with an SOS pad and that took off the dried stuck on layer. I have it soaking in a strong oxy clean solution, will let it sit for a few days and see where we are then. thanks for the input.
