when to whirl?
I currently use an emersion chiller. Should the whirlpool take place before, after or during the wort chill process?
Cool than Whirl
An immersion chiller should not be in the kettle during the whirlpool, as it will severely impede the crucial velocity of the whirl. However putting the immersion chiller in the kettle after the whirl risks disturbing the delicate trub cone. Therefore I would whirl after the chiller is removed from the wort. The risk of contamination will be increased because of the cool temp of the wort, so be as sanitary as possible. The good news is that trub separation will be better at cooler temps and cold break as well as hot break will be largely separated. Good luck.

sanitary pooling
I leave a metal spoon in the kettle during the boil and the chilling- I also use an immersion chiller- pooling is one of the reasons I do this
