Need a bit more info

Lloyd, Having some more info would definitely aid in determining if the 72 reading is way off. Several things to consider: 1. What temp was the wort @ reading? 2. What's your recipe? How much extract was used? What kind of extract, dry or liquid? 3. What was your boil size? (how big is your kettle?)...

HTL setup

Jawbox, I have a couple questions on your HLT setup: 1. How did you modify the braided hose to drain? I assume you punctured it a lot, with what though? 2. Is this a SS braided hose? Something I'd find at the local Home Depot plumbing area? 3. What diameter and length? 4. Drilling - any tips on doin...

Info

Well kev, start with the basics. The Freshops link legman provided will get you started in the right direction. A lot of the free/web material I found was very similar with subtle differences. "The Homebrewer's Garden" by Joe & Dennis Fisher is a good resource, but not super detailed. ...

Re: Getting Started

kevponce...good decision to grow your own, and to be honest, it's a great time to make that decision. You've got plenty of time to spend on soil prep during this growing season which can give your potential plants a much higher chance of success for next year. That's the one area I would have paid m...

Well, this worked surprisingly well, though it will only be a temporary solution. Some of the racking tube I used to connect the false bottom to the valve showed signs of warping due to the heat but other than that, it worked great. My efficiency was off because I was multitasking (kids, dinner, bre...

Spurs too!

One of my Horizon plants is showing tiny spurs as well and lots of them(enter sigh of relief here). I almost did a cartwheel but my senses kicked in (way too out of shape). Seems we all have our challenges this year...today for example, I came to the realization that my soaker hose was WAY TOO FAR a...

How my garden grows...

Well, I had planned on some serious soil prep with a sand-topsoil-dirt mix, but for some reason, I did not...simple mix of dirt & compost with a sprinkle of topsoil. Also, my location gets a good amount of shade. So far, my plants get roughly 6-7 hours of direct sunlight...definitely on the mini...

slow start

in my experience w/WP yeasts, the vials take a while to start so even with two vials pitched for 24 hours, it might be some time before serious activity begins. I moved to starters for this very reason...I was too impatient waiting for fermentation to begin. Also, the starter helps hit the higher en...

Well I have yet to brew anything bigger than an OG of 1.070 and aging is actually non-existent in my world...not that I don't want to let them age, it just doesn't happen for some reason  . I think that's part of the reason why I would like to brew a barleywine or imperial stout/porter/ipa. If...

3 gallon alternative

I thought about smaller batches, but a few factors weighed in...mostly the time involved in brewing the batch vs. yield...I'm very much a "biggest bang for the buck" person and a 3 gallon batch seems inefficient. Plus, my 5 gallon carboy is my smallest fermentation vessel...too much headsp...

Bottling Bucket as Lauter tun

Question first: Has anyone used a bottling bucket as a lauter tun? If so, what, if any, problems have arisen from using this piece of equipment for lautering? Reason: My limited budget has me trying to utilize less often used equipment and repurposing to meet my needs. I will eventually be convertin...

Length of hose

Would using longer, chilled length of hose connected to the tap reduce foaming? Or create more foam?

bottle filler and picnic tap

Will using these two components produce descent carbonation for temporary bottling? Say I wanted to take a few bottles to the golf course, would they remain carbonated? If so, how long would the beer stay carbonated using this method, ballpark guess? Most of my finances have gone towards kegging so ...

Hot pepper spray?

Legman, go mace those pests...lol! Should be a lot less stinky too.

Seriously though, is that the kind of hot pepper spray to which Dave was referring? That's a very interesting application for mace.
