Steep v. Mashing, and Growing Hops

There are two comments/questions that I'd like to make regarding, first, the steeping issue, and second, growing hops. First, "mule" started this post with a recipe which indicates that he will "steep [his grains] in 160* water for 45 min"; comments have been made that his grains...

I second that emotion :-)

Sung to the melody of that 1967 hit by "The Miracles" -- I second that emotion.

Seems like a formula could be created, but I'm pretty rusty on my math and I don't have time to look at it right now.

Cheers.

What about "dots" on the caps?

I've never bothered to label my beers; I just mark the bottle caps with a sharpie. However, it's almost impossible for me to write more than a few initials on the cap, so I have considered trying Avery "dots", but just haven't gotten around to it. "Dots" are 3/4" diameter ci...

There are sliding bars in the decoction editor

I want to take this opportunity to tell Jeff and Lathe how tremendously they have improved their 'Help Topics' and 'User Guide'. Having said that, there is no detailed explanation of the controls in the 'decoction editor', so I am therefore assuming, intuitively, that the sliding bars to the right o...

I imagine it does ... but am not sure

Since the decoction editor has all sorts of fields like how long it takes to reach a boil, and the boil duration, and the boil output (I assume that means the vigor of the boil), I would imagine that it is using that data to calculate how much is boiled away. I don't do decoctions, so I'm not that f...

Request for changes re 'First Wort Hopping'

Currently, selecting "First Wort (Kettle)" as the 'stage' for a particular hop addition doesn't seem to do anything at all except change the label in the ingredients panel; the 'Boil' time doesn't change or blank-out nor do the line-graphs on the right, and "Bitterness" is uneffe...

Yes, the FWH utilization should be user adjustable

I agree that the FWH utilization should be user adjustable, as just-cj suggested, for a couple of reasons: 1. I'm not sure that everyone's palate is the same and that the 'perceived' bitterness in any given beer will be the same to everyone; 2. This could possibly be affected to some degree by such ...

How can BTP be fixed so that FWH is set up correctly?

I guess I was careless in not actually getting to my specific question, but I think it was originally something like: "How can BTP allow me to select less than the full boil duration for 'First Wort' hopping?" Now I would change that to essentially ask: "How can BTP be fixed so that F...

First Wort Hopping and BTP software

I'm pretty sure I asked about this, or at least something very similar, a long time ago and never received a response from Jeff or Lathe, IIRC, but since I've been reading about 'First Wort Hopping' again today, I took another look at it re BTP. What prompted me was a post on the 'BrewBoard' forum (...

Re: electric kettle

I've never heard of anyone using an actual water heater, but a lot of people use water heater elements to make electric brew rigs. I think they are popular with people who want to brew indoors without asphyxiating. Exactly. I can't imagine anyone cutting open a still functioning water heater when a...

Re: Fluoride in tap water.....

Does anyone know the effect, if any, fluoride in tap water will have on a brew? Are you having a problem with your beer that you suspect is from flouride, ... or are you just curious? I've brewed for about a dozen years, and this is the first time that I've ever encountered any question about flour...

Issue re BTP hops utilization

I just want to be sure that Jeff, Lathe, and the many brewers here who have rightfully earned a lot of respect due to their impressive knowledge about brewing, are aware of a new discussion under the forum -- BeerTool.com Web Site | BeerTools.com Tools. It has to do with discrepancies in hops utiliz...

Why would the grain bill matter?

Why would the grain bill matter? The only difference it is going to make, as far as I can see, is in the resulting sugar profile within the wort, i.e., the ratios of maltose, maltotriose, fructose, sucrose, glucose, rubinose, dextrose, and any other 'oses' that might be in there. But the gravity is ...
