Correct
It is also called a blow off tube. It definitely makes a thumping sound while it is in action. Bottom line is there will be more than CO2 escaping from the top of the fermentor. If you rely on simply an air lock, you may be mopping the ceiling. Usually a Thumper Tube is a large diameter tube...

Two Things
One: No flavor or aroma hops in a Weizen.
Two: Change the yeast to WLP300. You will not have to worry about the yeast settling out. The brew will forever remain cloudy and yeasty... banana and clove to the last drop.
No problem kegging.
Oh, thumper tube will be REQUIRED!!!

I rack
I rack to recover the yeast from the primay. There are folks out there that don't secondary and have good results. Thats with the beer sitting on the yeast for up to a month. I, myself, normally primary for a week and secondary for two before kegging. Why are you not using a weizen yeast? Without it...

Just got the invoice
They soaked me for 12 bucks on shipping for two pounds of hops... talk about your handling fees... Oh well, I will re-bag them into one ounce packages and vacuum seal them so they should last me the rest of the year.

Compare Prices
I am paying 20 dollars a pound compared to 32 dollars a pound from Freshops. I have bought from them a long time ago and they are the ones I got my rhizomes from but they too are now pricey.

A couple of methods
Apply a heat belt. I have seen them advertised in beer catalogs but don't have any experience with them. Place your Ale Pail in a larger vessel of water that will maintain the temperature longer. You could rig an aquarium heater to it. Insolated box with a small light bulb and maybe a small fan to c...

Where's the Yeast?
Some yeasts do not take kindly to higher alcohol levels. While others finish higher. Did you pitch enough? That is usually associated with a yeast starter.

Secondary Fermentation
As I have said before, I only secondary to reclaim the good yeast before it has sat around too long.

Rule #1
When using liquid yeast, ALWAYS proof your yeast. There is nothing more discouraging then brewing wonderful wort only to find that the yeast was poor to dead. Making a yeast starter a few days prior will ensure that your yeast is ready for business.

If it works for you
Why change? There are a bunch of folks that just throw their hops into the pot without bags and then there are those who think that trub is bad in the primary. If your method eliminates 90% of the trub why are you concerned? Brewing is just as much an art as science. Don't get overly excited that yo...

I haven't heard of that specific LME but feel free to replace it with the LME of your choice. I would conduct a Google search of that LME first to see if there are any specifics I can match with a different brand starting with hopped/ not hopped, dark/ light and anything else I could find. With that...

Trub Worries
I usually don't worry about the trub as I primary for a week and transfer to a secondary leaving the trub behind. One idea that no one has mentioned is to transfer to the primary, wait a few hours for the trub to settle and then transfer the wort off the trub before the yeast is pitched. If you can ...

Did that last year
Welcome aboard. It is alway great to meet new folks on the board. I thought about brewing last weekend then this weekend but the temp isn't being nice. I brewed in the cold and heat here in Tennessee last year and have become a fair weather brewer. I did brew Jan 1 as it was such a nice day.
