Organic Pesticide?
Well, I was wrong about the pest part...sorry (I was at work and remembered the wrong thing). Turns out that the "tea" is good for fighting off powdery/downy mildew and verticillium wilt...sprayed directly on the plants in the morning or evening. A baking soda solution can be used as well,...

Organic pesticide
Compost tea or manure tea is suggested in The Homebrewers Garden to combat some pests and diseases...well rotted compost or manure soaked in water for a few days, then strained produces a "tea" like liquid you can spray with no remorse...can't say it will smell very good though...use glove...

Growing Status
My 5 rhizomes now all have broken through...they've been in the ground for several weeks now. 1 Centennial, 2 Horizon, & 2 Nugget...of these, the Centennial is shooting up the quickest. I had mine in the fridge for a couple weeks too Suthrn. Some had 2+ inch shoots on them, 1 Horizon & 1 Nug...

Waiting for shoots
I just planted my rhizomes after storing them for two weeks in the fridge due to a cold spell. I have 5 rhizomes in the ground about 3 days though my concern is this: What would be the maximum depth at which to plant the rhizomes? My fear is that I planted them a little too deep, maybe 6 inches or s...

Easy Freezing
Legman, it was not difficult at all. Yeast harvesting is like making the move from extract to all grain brewing, takes a bit more time and effort, but it's definitely worth it! Also, once you successfully go through the process for the first time, you don't necessarily have to do it again for some t...

Well gents, my first fozen vial has been pitched...tried my hand at an American Brown. Here's how it went down: 1. Thawed vial in luke warm h20 very quickly as directed (thanks slothrob) 2. 1st step starter very small, roughly .25 cup DME + pint of h20 + 1 drop olive oil...let ferment out, poured of...

Go blow off tube!
wausauben, I set up a blow off tube for every brew...some need it, others don't, but my paranoia doesn't allow me to risk it with just an airlock during the first few days in the primary. Other threads in this forum elude to wheats and stouts producing very high krausen. If that your preferred brew,...

Lt. Munich as a base malt
Has anyone used Lt. Munich as a base malt for an IPA or APA? I'm curious as to how an Munich-base ale would taste, using roughly 8-10# base malt recipe. I would think it might be sweeter than using Pale or Pils malt but I'm hesitant to experiment with something I've only used as a specialty malt so ...

Yeast heads unite in a pint!
WOW!!! After reading page 3 onto the end of page 4, amazing info and exchange of ideas...thanks gentlemen. Slothrob...keep on teaching! I like knowing the reasons for doing/not doing certain techniques. I would never have imagined that olive oil would benefit my beer!!! One questiont though,...

Pitching frozen vials
How much time should I allow (in days) before I brew to get a pitchable starter from a vial? I like to pitch 2.5-3 qt starters so I'm looking for a general idea of when to start the step starter. For example, my average starter from a fresh WL001 vial is 2 days minimum. Legman, I think you were the ...

RE: Racking onto yeast cake
If there were ever a chance to use the term Yeast Heads, this thread would be it...LOL!!! I'm curious, how long does the yeast sit in the fermenter after the beer is siphoned off? Is it totally enclosed until the wort is racked onto the cake? I was going to try this method this past weekend, but I f...

Not much yeast for the bank
I went out and got the yeast bank last week and began my starter (weaker than normal though). I filled my vials and pitched the starter last night. fermenter working throughout the day today and yeast has fallen in the vials. So I'm about to draw off the liquid from the 5 vials of starter but I noti...

DME Vs. LME
I found that using all DME, I had an off flavor described as "twangy" by other brewers. I didn't really notice it until several batches in. In batches where I used a mix of DME & LME, the twang was either undetectable or not present. One suggestion I would make if you're not already do...

Thanks
Slothorb, Yes...I harvested from my primary, washed, and made a starter. The starter was spewing out of the airlock (approx 3 qts in 1 gal glass jug) within about an hour of pitching and aerating...it was a first, I was amazed!!! Also, thanks for directing me to mrmalty.com...answered lots of questi...
