question about oxygen

during my transfer to secondary on my latest batch, i had a problem with my siphon. It was drawing air for the whole transfer. I tasted it at that point and it was good, now after a week in the secondary it seems to have gotten worse. Maybe after a bit of conditioning it will get better but it seems...

auto-siphon

I have been using the auto siphon and love it, except on my latest usage it was pulling air in from around the o-ring at the end of the dip tube. I cleand it really good and it still does it. Is there a lube or something that I should use? Has anyone else ever had this problem? I was using it for my...

fermentation chiller

I recently made a chiller that I found online. Its pretty simple to make, small, light weight and only cost me about $70 total. You just have to replace ice jugs every day or so. I followed the directions exactly and it worked out great.

While i'm on the subject...

I have used Iodopher on plastic a few times and it has gotten discolored. Is this merely a cosmetic problem or is it not a good idea to use it on plastic? I would rather just use Iodopher on everything(glass, stainless and plastic) if its not going to cause any other problems besides the discolorati...

I have a question about sanitizing with iodopher. I am not supposed to rise it off, just let it air dry. What if it is not completely dry before i use it? I just started a batch and noticed there was still droplets on the inside of my carboy before I filled it. Please tell me i didnt screw up this b...

a bit confused

did you mean to use the Marris Otter extract and a pound of light DME instead of all the other ingredients or use all the other ingredients?
sorry if this is a stupid question
also, I have never used a liquid yeast before like wyeast. Does it make a big difference over dried yeast?

styles

I am a big fan of hops, so I like IPA's a lot. I also like brown ales and stouts. This time of year a lighter beer is nice. not much into wheats(although Ive never had a wheat homebre)

recipes

I certainly intend to work from a recipe when I get better at this but for now I like just reading directions and having everything all measured out for me. I know... lazy, but it works for now. By the way, the recipes on this site look great. It is incredible that you guys are so willing to share. ...

they have extract beer kits (which is what I am doing at this point) most for under $20!

nebee to kegging also

I am new to the kegging thing also but I will tell you what I have found to work well so far. I purge the oxygen then chill the keg for a day or so. bring pressure up to 20# and rock it for 5 or 10 minutes until I hear no flow. It has worked perfect for me so far(only 4 kegs). It simplifies the whol...
