RE: Size of cones
That would be correct Bill. Nitrogen produces green growth. Potassium is an essential element for healthy development of plant roots. Potassium also acts as a natural agent for providing a protective shield against numerous types of plant diseases .Phosphorus is essential for the maintenance of prop...

Hey good deal man. :) If you can repeat that on a consistent basis, you're on to something. The grains I bought were actually crushed by the company who supplies grain to my LHBS. The crush is always great when it comes like this. I have to pay an extra few cents per pound, but it's worth it. When I...

RE:Improving Mash Efficiency?
Suthrn, You'd be surprised at how important the grain crush is. It's probably the #1 factor effecting efficiency. Before I bought my own mill, I was getting my grains crushed at my LHBS. My efficiency was all over the place (40-72%) and I had a hard time predicting any values consistently at all. On...

Installing a kettle valve
Just got a killer deal on a very heavy duty 60 qt. stock pot on Craigslist. It sells for $250-380 for a new one. I got it for 30 bucks! I'm wanting to install a drain valve on this, but have never done this before and don't want to take a chance on screwing this up. Anyone got any info, ti...

Kegging
Suthrn, I have the same problem.....kegerator only holds 2 kegs. But it's not a big deal to have a stock ready to go. Right now I got 8 kegs full and waiting to be tapped. They are all at different aging stages. For the majority of them I've got it timed to where they'll be in the keg 2-3 months bef...

RE:Brewing Issues
TJ, there are many factors which can have an effect on flavor. You'll have to be more specific than "taste like crap". :P Read through this page to see if it fits into one of these categories. Then we may be able to narrow down what's going on. http://www.howtobrew.com/section4/chapter21-2...

Water Dept.
Yeah, that's what I had to do. When I first contacted them about a water report they mailed a nicely printed pamphlet with pretty pictures of our town and what not. I didn't tell me squat about my water chemistry. So I had to email them and ask specifically for the things that I was looking for. The...

That last one concerns me a bit. All of my plants seem to be dying at the bottom of the vines. Is this just because more nutrients are needed at the top half to produce hops? Or have I overcrowded them? Suthrn, I'm not sure what to say about that.....other than mine have some of that going on too. ...

re:poles
The poles are actually the top rail for a chain link fence. They are 10' long and only cost about 9-10 bucks @ Lowe's. They also have a cap w/ an eyelet that I ran the strings through (tied on end to the bottom of pole/ other ends to hops). I can raise and lower them for harvesting and I don't have ...

RE:High SRM and 300 RA
That sounds more logical to me. I went back and read Chapter 15 several times and that's what I kinda got out of it, even though it wasn't that specific. I haven't been able to listen to the podcast yet.....My sound card is on the fritz. But any rate, that's good to now and clears up a few thi...

Preperation
Kev, Now is a great time to start planning! First, you need to find a place with full sun (6-8+ hours). Decide how many you're going to grow and if you have the space for it. In general, "they" say plant same varieties 3 ft. apart and plant different varieties 5 ft. apart. Next, you'll nee...

Re: HCO3
Did I say CO3 not above 300? I think that's supposed to be RA not above 300. (I'll look for the reference, but I might have got it from that podcast that kevponce mentioned.) Slo, I confirm it was from the podcast. As I was listening to it I was jotting down notes in a word file. I just looked at m...
