Irish moss utilization and rehydration ? ? ?

I just finished reading an article "Get grain on your brain" in the March/April edition of "Brew Your Own" magazine. On page 33 there is a good explanation of hop utilization, but there is also covered Irish moss and how it should be added at the 60 min. mark with your bittering ...

However what I do is the day before I brew I syphon one step through my CF chiller and use two caps to plug both ends. I let it soak in there for ten minutes and then I flush it with boiling wate...

It might be your yeast

I agree with Freon12, I USED to ues dry yeast, too many inconsistancies, that was the old days, no more, make at least a one pint yeast starter, a liter yeast starter will give you better results, don't skimp on the yeast it is as important as the other ingredients. Buy good Liquid yeast, www.grapea...

Water amounts

Hi stouts, I use a kettle / propane burner also, and made a pilsner yesterday. This is my method and it works, but it is not scientific by any means, my total water is 7 gallons, 3/4 gallon will stay behind soaked up by the grain, and one gallon will get boiled off, I consistantly get 5 - 5 1/4 gall...

Secret Brewing tip #2

Good idea Ford, here's mine. If you are into culturing your own yeast and feel that you must hold your breath while transferring yeast so that your bacteria ridden breath doesn't contaminate your yeast, take 4' of 3/4" clear tubing and drape it over your shoulder and tuck it through a belt loop...

Test Results ? ? ?

Andy, Billy is right when you sit down and try to help you inevitably forget something. I mashed the last batch I made at 90 mins, and it still rendered black on the test, I sipped a little liquid off of the top and it still tasted starchy, kind of like raw bread dough. I let it sit for another 30 m...

Tip ... Iodine test

For anyone out there into all grain or anyone thinking about taking the leap, here is a cool little test you can do to check if your mash has been completely converted. After the mash has gone through your normal schedule and you what to check to make sure that the grain has been fully converted, pl...

Planned on brewing an all grain American Pale ale today and went to go on line last night to use the "Generator" ... I had to revert back to the good old days before this site and winged it LOL ... needless to say I am sipping a nice IPA I bottled on 9-18-01, it has matured nicely ... Glad...

Yup, put a paper towel to it ...

By the time you rack there's enough alcohol in there to kill marginal bacteria, fresh paper towels will do the trick, if you heard stories that my grand mother told about brewing during the prohibition in an open crock on the back porch and how the "men" just loved that home brew, she prob...
