Aluminum Kegs??

Most beers nowadays are stored in aluminum kegs. I have a draft system installed in my bar and would like to toss some homebrew from it.... Will the fact that the beer conditions in aluminum contribute off tastes etc?? Aluminum kegs (only $10) are easy to "debung" and scrub, and I have fou...

Dishwasher??

In my brewclub, we minimize pre-bottling preparation by storing the clean bottles in a bleach/water solution, afterwards we throw them in the dishwasher (unfortuneately most washers will only hold about 48 bottles). There are some important steps though; 1) run the dishwasher w/o soap ahead of time ...

You may be right

Jeff, Thanks for the reply. Please review our bottle washing method and critique; 1) First, after we empty a bottle, we rinse and submerge it in a cooler full of water w/ some bleach. This is primarily to loosen the label adhesive w/o providing a bacterial growth medium. 2) Once the cooler is full, ...

Excessive CO2

members of our brewclub have complained that some of their beers have "too much head". I have read articles of "infected grain" but i don't think that it applies, as some of these beers were extract based. It seems to me that the standard prescribed injection of corn sugar for al...

Not as bad as you think!

It's remarkable that you and I are taking the exact same steps forward towards 10gal all grain brewing. I now am ready to start, and here is how my brewclub approached equipment needs; 1) brewpot - You will need at least a 16gal brewpot. Your alternatives are as such; a) Buy an inexpensive enameled ...

Thanks Brewdude

Thanks for the input. Since my post, i have visited Wyeast's website and spoke w/ their people, who were very helpful. I think I know how to grow my own yeast now. I'll try after the next batch. here's a tip for you you may already know); Mcmaster Carr Supply (www.mcmaster.com) has a great selection...

Labels; Software, etc

I know this response is a little late, but here is what we do in my brew club; Use a good graphics program to create the lebel. I use Microsoft Visio (a bit pricey but very versatile). You'll find that visio has numerous applications, from label design to process mapping and facility layouts (sort o...

Harvesting Yeast

My brew club's current objective is to lower $$$ per batch, and we have identified the need to harvest and re-use the yeast from our batches. Can someone give me the lowdown of the mechanics and effectiveness of this process?? How is it done? What qty do you need for a standard gravity 10gal batch? ...

Grain husks??

I've experienced a similarly crappy sharp taste once when I accidentally raised the mash temperature to 180+. I attributed the result from extracting the bitterness of the grain husks.

Bigger Fermentors

My brewing club and I are about a month into all-grain brewing and have identified the need for bigger batch capability. I have been looking into larger fermentors (15 gal) for a double batch. The problem is that $$$ increases exponentially as capacity increases. What gives?? Does anyone know a sour...

O2 and Conditioning

I have read the other posted response and agree that over time, plastic becomes more difficult to sanitize, however, I am still confident using plastic pails as primary fermentors so long as they are in good shape. Try not to use any sort of abrasives while cleaning and you will be OK. The other maj...
