Hmm...
After reading your reply, I can't fault anything but the Maris. I used to use around 45,000 to 55,000 pounds of Maris a year, bith from Simpsons and Crisp. Since I buy direct from the wholesalers, you'd assume it would be in the best condition. I found that it was inconsistent at best and poor at wo...

Re: 1.25 gallon mini kegs
You should not use these kegs for home brewing. These "Fass" kegs were designed for counter pressure filling, not "keg" conditioning homebrew. They cannot withstand the pressures generated by conditioning for carbonation many times before bulging and blowing the top seal. They ar...

Re: Possible Un-invited Guests in Brown Ale
"...I have noticed some little clumps of material that are stuck to the inside of the bottle neck in the headspace above the beer. I almost might think it was yeast but the yeast seems to generally fall straitght to the bottom rather than find itself on the sides." If the beer was tilted a...

"Tried to use my strainer which usually works fine but the 3oz of hops i had in the boil this time clogged my strainer when i poored it to the primary." Did you whirlpool the wort and let it settle before transfer? If you did, this it was a waste of time since you are pouring the contents ...

Re: aromatic finish in all-grain beers
What is the flavor of the beer like? Have all of these AG beers had a similar flavor that you suspect is related to the "hay" aromatics? I'm not sure, but to guess, I'd say you are lautering too aggressively or are not vorlaufing well or long enough. This can allow husk fractions to be tra...

Not really, but...
You could use a smaller amount of 40L crystal malt and suppliment it with Carapils/dextrine malt (same thing). The result won't be exactly the same, but close. Carapils (Briess) and dextrine malt is actually a form of very light crystal malt made from undermodified malt.

Trash Bag Works!
BB; Put a contractor grade trash bag over the vessel. Combined with the opacity you described, it should work fine. The concept to remember with light is that the visible wavelengths to our eyes differ from the ones that we need to protect beer from. This extra layer of opacity will pretty much elim...
