Acid malt

I once brewed a good Guiness Clone with acidulated malt, instead of souring a beer. It worked pretty good. I have an extract recipe for a really great sweet stout, I'll see if I can find it and post.

My assumptions

I assume that the danger comes from airborne crappies in your freezer. It makes sense that if the water is clean, and it is frozen in a clean conatiner, then you would be OK. But a gallon conatiner with a wide open lid would be dificult to find (try to convince your wife/girlfriend/roomate that you ...

Good Answer!!

Jim, I asked this same question several months ago, and was a little disturbed to find that no-one seemed to think it too bad an idea to run a turkey cooker inside a garage or basement. I know that incomplete combustion produces a ton of CO, so I never tried it. I guess the good question becomes; Ho...

Beerflies

I am attributing my substandard results this summer to two things; heat & bugs. The PA summer this year was brutal. My beer room is usually around 62F, even with a deep freeze chugging in the corner. I know it's a marginal temp, but I was able to achieve good results with ale yeast in this room. Thi...

Contamination

If my memory serves me correctly, you cannot use ice because ice can harbor living contaminates. I have used ice in conjunctin with a immersion chiller and a recirculating pump (ice in the reservoir) with good results. Also, perhaps a few milk jugs full of ice (cleaned with sanitizer would work. Aga...

No Wall Art

I was reluctant to drop a temp probe into the starter, but measuring the outside of the flask gave me 80F. I started at about 75F. I'm in the process of doing a little reading & polishing my temp control a bit...now that autumn has come and I'm not fighting 90F weather. As far as stirrer size....I d...

New gadgets!!

I brewed on Friday (had the day off work) and had a chance to use my two new gadgets. For those of you thinking about some new beer toys, please review; 1) The magnetic stirrer was great!! I raised a one liter starter from dry yeast(two pkgs), DME, and yeast nutrient, and let it sit atop the stirrer...

Pennsylvania Brewing

I am so ashamed. I've lived in the Pittsburgh area for nearly 12 years, and I have just visited Penn brewing for the first time yesterday. I feel the need to recommend this little brewery/pub to all. Like a typical brew pub, these guys can only make one beer at a time, yet they find a way to sell th...

Gadgets

I am almost sure that we all went over this a few months ago, but I couldn't find the posts. I for one, would do all my homebrew shopping from the local guy, but my local guy is 45 miles away from my home, so often times I just use internet suppliers. I think you would have to develop a good strong ...

Mash Hopping?

I'm intirgued by the mash hopping concept, but know nothing about (and I don't get Zymurgy). Can someone summarize the concept for me. I hope to use it tommorrow with my APA, which I typically use perle to bitter, and cascade to flavor (and aroma & dry hop).

Up in da hills heer....

Rural Western PA is no stranger to marijuana use, almost all the hillbillies use it in moderation. My buddies in the brew club have discussed using it as a flavoring, but I'm afraid what you would end up with is a $100+ batch of beer that taste a little like marijuana. The reality is that is would b...

Second Marley

We almost always listen to the Marley box set while brewing. I don't know why.... it just happens that way. Big bonus: The heavy fat bass and soothing rythm puts my 4 mo old to rest.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

My friends like my beer too, but I'd rather invest in new gadgets for brewing, than accomodating my somewhat freeloading friends' needs. When I show up at buddy's place, sometimes I bring a couple growlers. The first beer is better than the last, but it's still pretty good. When my friends start sho...
