gonna get it

I bought 2 kits about 3 weeks ago. One i used for the latest"shock beer"(as we like to call it) and I am waiting to finish my counterflow chiller to make the other one. Should I be concerned about the freshness of the other one? maybe I should make it today and just let the carboy sit on an ice bath...

yup, star san

that stuff is great to use. Its ok to have some foam residue right? thats what it said on their wesite. Its almost impossible to get the foam to drain out. as far as the yeast, i buy kits from listermans and put the yeast in my fridge as soon as i get it which is 2 days from his fridge. The yeast yo...

this HAS to be it

Ive covered everything else. I am working on a counterflow chiller and a custom stainless siphon(just trying to figure a good way of making a mesh for a filter that I can take apart to clean real good). I have a package of coopers dry yeast to use with my next batch(a porter). Is that a good yeast t...

temp

I use a fermentation chiller and I keep it at 64deg.
This seems to make sense, because usually by the time i finish brewing it is late and i am rushing. The batch that came out good was done during the day and I believe i made sure the wort was nice and cool before i pitched the yeast

info

I am doubtful that the off taste is just young beer. It is completely undrinkable and tastes exactly the same as all the other failed batches. I still have one of them in a keg that I try every so often(going on 2 months now). It only seems to get worse. I did have grains and I steeped them at 170de...

another opinion

I asked the little lady to help me out here. I poured her a sample and had her give her opinion on what it tastes like with the help of Mr. Palmer and his book which lists off very nicely a bunch of off flavors. She thought it seemed kind off Like sucking on a tea bag "Astringent", but when I got do...

Jumping the gun here

I know its too early to ask this but... I just racked out of my secodary into a keg. I tasted it and it seems to be a little off. It is an IPA, so I figured it would have a strong hop taste. It smells nice and sweet but the taste is kinda soapy. I read that soap tastes can be from being left in the ...

counterflow chiller

OK, I got a nice 10 gallon pot on the way. now I need a chiller. I was going to purchase one when I realized the simplicity of it. I came accross a site that explains in detail http://hbd.org/jdbrown/chiller.htm#pict Is there a large benifit to using all copper as opposed to using a garden hose for ...

keg

My friend has a quarter barrel that I can have. Gonna slice that top off and use it for now(about 7.5 gal capacity I think). But I'm gonna keep my eyes open on e-bay and such. I never looked before but I bet there is tons of equipment out there. Thanks for the tremendous response and great advice fr...

water

my water tastes as good as any bottled water but I dont think I can handle another bad batch so I'm gonna use bottled for at least this next one. My local supply house has 8 gollon heavy stainless for $125. Sounds pretty much inline for what i see out there. The 10 gallons are pushing $200. Should I...

thanks

thanks alot for all the info. a few slightly different opinions but it everyone agrees that my unsanitized tap water is baaaaad. I found a burner I'm gonna use and am looking to get a large pot to do a full boil(the burner came with a 30quart aluminum pot, but i want a stainless one). How big of a p...

uh oh

jeez, i thought that a small anount of iodopher in solution was not bad. tasteless and oderless. Sometimes I dont let it completely evaporate.
The bad brews were an american light ale(not all malt), an american pale ale, a nut brown ale and another one that I cannot remember.

to be honest

I have never checked gravity to see if fermentation had stopped. For fear of infection, i try to limit my contact with it. I usually just go a week in the primary and another week in the secondary. My brother sometimes refers to the taste as bitter, but to me it seems more rancid than bitter. would ...
