slothrob,
Hummm... I hadn't thought to do that, nor have a I ever tried to test the gravity of an already carbonated beer. Would I have to leave the sample out until it went flat before testing or something like that? I'm assuming the Co2 bubbles would affect the hydrometer reading....

Re: Blending & Bottling Sour Ale
Hi again, I posted this question a while back and realize it's a difficult one to give advice on because there are many variables, not to mention real danger, and it's also an area of brewing where the true art of the craft shines bright. Believe me when I say I'm far from that sort of crafty artist...

Blending & Bottling Sour Ale
Greetings, I'm hoping you may be able to help with a question on blending sour ale that I can't seem to find much info on. I have a one year old Flanders that I want to blend with a straight kolsch in an attempt to smooth/balance out the extreme sourness of the Flanders. I brewed/bottled this same F...

Stuck Saison
Thank you for the suggestions, I don't think I've seen the 3711 before, so I'll check on that. I was wondering if temps may be playing a part as well since it's winter now and a bit cooler. I'd say it's been averaging in the 63-65 F range sitting up off the floor in my house. I was considering buyin...

Stuck Saison
Howdy, I'm hoping for some advice regarding a saison I brewed. I used Wyeast 3724 for the first time and from what I've read is known for it's potential for stuck fermentation. My OG was 1.059 and I just racked to a secondary after a little over two weeks in the primary. I took a reading and it's on...

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I've been seeing temp ranges from the low 140's to high 150's and with such a large variance I was having a hard time picking a middle ground to accept. I think another problem is that I've always done a two-step mash with an initial protein rest at around 125 for 30 mins. ...

Mash temps
Howdy, I'm trying to troubleshoot ways to increase my efficiency and currently I'm focused on how best to accurately measure my mash temp. I use the typical cooler mash tun and a dial thermometer with about an 8-10" stem. I've noticed that after I pitch my strike water and stir thoroughly that ...

I did use the lower ppg for the oats in my calculations so I don't think it was that. I hadn't thought about conversion efficiency, but I do always do the standard iodine conversion test. If I pass the iodine test does that mean that my conversion is good or could it still be off and the gravity mus...

Flaked Oats
Okay, good to get confirmation of that possibility. I recently used oats in a recipe and my efficiency came out lower than expected and I've been trying to put a finger on the reason. My system isn't the most efficient to begin with, so I think the oats just compounded the problem. Thankfully, I had...

Flaked Oats
I've been trying to do some reading up on the use of flaked oats and mashing, but I can't seem to find too many specifics. I'm wondering if the use of flaked oats (like around 1 lb per 5 gal) in the mash will it affect your efficiency while sparging out? It seems like the oats might make the mash &q...
