Doing Something Differntly

It's my understanding that one should avoid using distilled water because it lacks minerals / compounds that are useful to yeast. "Spring water" or some such product that lacks chlorine might be a better choice.

Anybody know more about this? I'm pretty new to all this, too.

Thanks.

Intended OG is 1.075, 6 gal.

Mr. Malty's calculator says 2 packs to make a 1.61L starter for that OG, volume of wort, and date on yeast packs.

The light shines on the path ahead.

Thanks.

Starter for Tripel

Am planning on brewing a tripel this weekend. I bought two smack packs of Belgian Abby II.

My question: What are the pros and cons of pitching each pack into a separate 1L starters VS pitching both packs into a single 1L starter?

Thanks.

Cure for flat tripel?

I brewed a tripel, OG 1.080 FG 1.016. At bottling, I added a pack of S-O4 (what I had on hand) to the bucket with the corn sugar solution. Opened a bottle two weeks later and it's as flat as an ice rink. I am guessing the the S-04 couldn't handle the alcohol? Should have used champagne yeast. Is the...

Pitching Dry Yeast

There is much written about yeast starters, but none seems to relate directly to using dry yeast.

For a 6 gallon batch of APA I plan to brew in the next few day, I have 11.5g packs of Safale US-05. Should I
  • Make a starter?
    Pitch one pack?
    Pitch two packs?
Thanks.

Thermometers?

I have a a handheld instant read thermometer and a floating thermometer that came in a kit. The floater is inaccurate, and the handheld unit is tricky to use in the HLT when the water is hot. I want accuracy and convenience. What do you folks use that fits the bill? Are the digital units worth the p...
