Thanks to all!

Well I certainly got enough information. I'll try bring the bottles into the house and see if the warmer temperature has any effect. I did let my son cap this batch so maybe he didn't get them on tight enough. I think I'll look into kegging. The bottles are getting to be a bit of a pain and it sound...

Thanks for the reply.

Hi James, Here's the info on my IPA. First, I stole the recipe from Brew Monkey. It's called Hop Water IPA. Very bitter and very hoppy; even flat it's still pretty good. My local brew store substituted some of the hops and the yeast. Instead of the London ESB Ale I used White Labs WPL013. Here's a l...

Flat IPA.

Hi Gang,

I made a bitter IPA that turned out great except that it is flat. Not a bit of carbonation! Anyway, I'm not throwing it out!!!

What went wrong?

Thanks for the help,

Eric

Hey Everybody, Thanks for all the comments. I'm a newbie so my learning curve is pretty steep, I hope. Thanks for the ABV calculation, bfabre. That's a lot simpler than the one I scrounged off the internet. Using your calculation the IPA comes out to 6.8% ABV. Just about the same. I did taste it and...

OK, OK. I'll hide some and try to forget where it is. I do have an IPA and a red ale that should be drinkable soon. This Russian stout is a bit wimpy. I made it from a Brewer's Best kit and if I figured it correctly the ABV is only 4.15%. My latest effort is another IPA that I made from a recipe I f...

My Russian Imperial Stout tastes....

Hi Gang, I made a Russian Imperial Stout from a Brewer's Best extract kit. It's been in the bottle for about seven weeks now and I'm told that this beer gets better with age. It's not too bad except that it tastes like burnt molasses. And it doesn't have much of a head and it seems fizzy on the tong...

Could be diacetyl.

I guess it could be diacetyl. Wikipedia says that at low levels diacetyl can impart a slippery feeling to an alcoholic beverage. But there is no buttery flavor so maybe I just have a minor case of diacetyl.

I think that's a definite maybe.

Slime beer.

Hi Slobthrob, Thanks for the reply. I made this beer from the Brewer's Best kit for IPA. It's an extract beer. I do drink it out of a glass but it's still slimy. Not too bad for me but hard to explain to guests. Oh well. My Russian Stout, also from a Brewer's Best kit, should be ready in a week. Hop...

I drank my IPA.

My first brewing attempt has been tasted. Not too bad, but... it has a good bitter flavor but it's very thin tasting, almost like water, with no body. And it's got a slippery or slimy feeling on the tongue that gets worse the closer to the bottom of the bottle you get. It has a beautiful amber color...

Houston, we have fermentation!

Well I guess there was some "stealth fermentation" going on. My OG was 1.041 and now, 5 days later, I have 1.014. these are both pretty much where they should be. Oh happy day! The lid on my ale pail seemed tight so who knows? Thanks for the replies and especially for the in depth informat...

No bubbles on my red ale.

We made some red ale from the Brewer's Best kit. After four days there is still no sign of fermentation.

What's up with that? Anyone?

Oops... the new, official, temperature corrected FG is: 1.004. Still pretty low. so on the advice of my son, who doesn't know anything either, we decided to re-ferment this IPA. We added some priming sugar and yeast and left it in the carboy.

I'll let you know how this saga turns out.
