easy mashtun

Do this-it takes about 10-15 minutes, only tools needed are a wrench to get the spigot out of the cooler, tinsnips for the stainless braid, and a screw driver for the clamps.

This guy is highly knowledgable.

JSP mill

I had a good experience with Schmidling. My malt mill is working great. My buddy cautioned me that Jack is arrogant though.

As long as my mill works well for a long time, I'm good.

overnight cooling

I did this on my first couple batches and really had no problems. I didn't know you could loose finnishing notes that way. Since then, I've been told by everyone that faster cool and pitch and less lag is paramount. The faster the good guys (your yeast) set up camp, then better chance of a good prod...

High OG

OK, I'm having the same issue, but suspect I'm not doing it right. I have been putting fresh wort it is usually about 3.5 gallons in the hydrometer flask for my OG. That would make the wort seem more "concentrated?" Should I be taking the reading from the wort after it is combined with the top off w...

.com or download?

Any sage advice on whether buying the downloadable version of BTP or the online version is better?

Sorry for stupid questions, I just want to spend wisely.

kit vs raw

True! I told myself early on that I am out to have fun, learn, and enjoy. Almost any homebrew batch is still cheaper than the 8 sixpacks of topshelf brew from a liquor store. I maybe changing lhbs because the 3rd one I tried gave great advice, and seemed willing to make some bulk discounts. I admit ...

Raw or Kit

Here is a general question that hopefully isn't too redundant... Which is cheaper for a minimash brewer? mailorder kits like from AHS or getting all your own incredients. I think the later has to be since I'm willing to Overbuy most of my grains. Now I have enough grain for the next two batchs. Ever...

Whacha Brewin

I am still fledgling. I have my first original recipee IPA in primary right now. I know IPA is cliche' but I haven't made IPA in months, and I figured I know enough about how I want it to taste to tweak the recipee going forward. Besides, does anyone REALLY not like a balanced, but slightly hoppy IP...

beer labels

I too have thought about labels. Then my mentor said, "hey you'll just have to soak them off again. :x So I'm a sharpie letter on the cap guy now. I agree, A date code would pretty smart as supply catches up with demand in my conditioning shelves. I still love the idea of cool labels, my father in l...

Starter Kits/plastic buckets, versus glass carboys

I agree with comments. I learned to brew with a friend who had the carboys, so I emulated his set up. I have heard horror stories about breakage. I bought the expensive handles too since I have to schlep my brews to the basement. I still wanted a couple ale pales for racking, bottling, sanitizer bat...

Blowoff drank sanitizer liquid

I was finishing up the 2nd batch and a little sleepy. I wanted to put my Primary 6gal Carboy in the basement to cool overnight and pitch first thing -like 7 hours later. I had a big plastic mug of c-brite solution i saved from the sanitization of everything else to put the end of the blow off in. I ...
