I like the direction you are going here...reuse not refuse. 1. Creating a starter is the easiest way to revive the yeast. You may want to "wash" the yeast first. Search yeast washing for the specifics, but it's hella easy. 2. I've stored washed yeast in my fridge for about a month prior to...

Loading up the bank

Congrats Wotta...isn't it great?

I've got two strains going into the freezer today, WLP500 & WLP023. This brings my bank total to three different varieties, WLP001 being the first and most often used.

WLP008 is next up, with WLP004 on the wish list.

Now I need more DME, LOL!

Keg Fermenter Kit

Check out this link...not sure if I posted it correctly. You might be able to build one for cheaper...depends on how determined you are to save $$. http://www.midwestsupplies.com/products/ProdByID.aspx?ProdID=6120 A buddy of mine just picked up some cornies and plans to do this until he gets a keg s...

Taste over time

Legman, I just purchased this strain and I would like to use it in my next IPA. How long did it take for your brew to develop the tartness from the sourness? I'm just curious as to whether to keg or bottle when using this strain when the time comes. Usually if it goes in the keg, it's consumed relat...

Glad I asked

Thanks for the info gents...the links provided definitely helped. I ended up using two 5 gallon sparges and came very close to my predicted OG after the boil (two points off). So until I obtain a Barley Crusher, I'll probably continue with two sparges. I also need to find the time to work through th...

Thing of beauty

shunt...Very impressive and shiny!

Was your stand pre-fabricated or did you build it? If pre-fab, where did you get it?

I would love to put together something like this...but I think I'm several tax returns away for doing so, lol.

Mash Thickness in rect. cooler mash tun

So I'm about to embark on my first 10 gallon batch using my newly converted cooler as a mash tun. In the past when fly sparging, I've used the 1.3qt/lb ratio for my mash with good results. Now that I'll be using a new system and batch sparging, I'm wondering if I need to adjust my mash thickness. Do...

Yellow to gold

Suthrn...I bet it gets darker in appearance in higher concentrations, much like beer in a carboy. My Centennial and Horizon cones are about the same color lupulin, though Horizons are further along and have more dense lupulin. Because I don't expect much yield (not enough to brew at least) this year...

I'm seeing about 2 dozen or so cones on my tallest Horizon plant that seem to be getting close to harvest. Try picking one that seems ready and cut it open to look for lupulin. IF there's a lot of the "yellow stuff" you're probably ready to pick those cones of similar maturity. I've been c...

Kegging

I used to keg 30PSI @ 32F and I experienced the same thing....MEGA FOAM and little remaining carbonation in the beer, but it was not flat. I toned it down to 15PSI @ 32f and it's perfect. Basically what's happening with your beer is that it's over-saturated with CO2, so when you pull off a pint, all...

Drilling results

Hole saw worked like a charm...testing out the kettle today. I am really amazed at how simple this conversion process is. I cannot wait to begin the 10 gal batches...I might actually get some home improvement projects done  ! PS - anyone interested in a SS value assembly for a conversion, searc...

Found some

Legman, So with that said, in my opinion, I think you'd be alright. The exposure to the galvanized metal is so minute, I don't think there would be any risk....if there is even a risk. I was leaning in the same direction. If it were truly "bad" to use galvanized, there would be a lot more ...

Zinc in the Kettle

I'm in the process of a keg-to-kettle conversion and I'm piecing together a weldless valve with limited success. The problem I've run into is finding SS washers that fit my 3/8" compression coupler. One solution suggested to me was to use what I believe are galvanized bushings to set between th...

Drilling and a Weldless Valve

I'm in the process of keg-to-kettle conversion and decided to go the weldless route for my valve. I have yet to drill into the keg but have researched the following: Use a bi-metal hole saw Drill slowly with significant pressure (not too much) lots of wd-40 (to cool the surface and bit) This was my ...

Batch sparge question

So I'm stepping things up a little bit...upgrading my current all grain set up to accommodate 10 gallon batches...three young kids, a wife, and a honey-do list that expands exponentially have severely diminished my brew time. As such, I'm moving from fly to batch sparging and I need to know how long...
