secondary
Hmm what kind of beer did you make. I'd say if its a low gravity extract brew you should be fine without secondary fermentation. Secondary fermentation is used to transfer your beer off the dead yeast once primary fermentation is done. If it sits on the dead yeast longer than 2 weeks it will give yo...

too much carbonation?
I bottled my IPA last night and I'm concerned it may not be completely finished fermenting but went ahead with it anyways since I made it for the holidays. It went from 1.064 to 1.020 in 4 days in the primary then i racked to the the secondary. After a week in the secondary it went to 1.016 and this...

Re: first partial-mash brew
<How do I adjust the grain bill to work with the smaller boil?> your boil should be around 1.070 at a 4 gallon boil already assuming that recipe is a 5 gallon batch. adding more or taking away malt is the only thing that will affect your gravity as it will stay constant when you add water <How can I...

all you belgian tripel fans
just bottled my belgian tripel. smells fruity and estery. without carbonation it tastes alot like white wine/cabernet, is this proper? my og was 1.080 and it fermented down to 1.010. I added a little over 1/2 cup priming sugar for a 3 gallon batch which is normal, but i have heard that for this styl...

poor mash efficiency
the week before i had a great mash effeciency using my cooler prob 80% or 85%... This time however I calculated a efficiency of 50%. The only thing i did different this time was i grind my own grain using a corona type grinder. I had the setting to grind pretty course which I would think would be ok...

trub
Ok thanks for the great info. I do have a spigot on my kettle so i will whirlpool and then drain through it next time. Sounds like I am going to need some patience though while I siphon and wait for the beer to clear. I'm looking forward to giving it a taste while i rack it the 3 time though .

Pale ale - Too much trub??
Tried to use my strainer which usually works fine but the 3oz of hops i had in the boil this time clogged my strainer when i poored it to the primary. So i got all this trub in my primary and even though i had the cap on my racking cane when i racked it to the secondary, it seems alot has racked ove...

fruity yeast
Yea I've read that banana and fruity smells are just bi-products from certain european yeast strains. Best to smell like that than sweaty socks or anti-septic which would me its contaminated beer. I brewed my first weizen last week and had the same fruity smell. I was actually really relieved that i...
