re:Taste over time
Shaggy, It's been quite awhile since I've used this yeast. I think, if I remember correctly, I may have been tasting this early on and not giving it enough time to age. I want to say the last time I used this yeast, I let it age 2 months before drinking and everything seem alright. I've since then h...

Bill, I knew you weren't doing that and I didn't take it that way at all. I've read all the same type of complaints about conicals. And to tell you the truth, I was contemplating about not doing it, until I found the SS hopper. Then I had to do it. Either way, it should be a fun experiment. I like t...

I don't think I'm going to get anything this year. I had a few Goldings starting to for, but it looks like they've shriveled up. It's been raining almost every day here for the past 2 1/2 weeks and I think I'm starting get some disease. A few of them are starting to look pretty bad. Leaves are turni...

RE:Conical problems
Bill, I have read things that do state some of what you said. Particularly the part about the trub being stuck and not draining from the dump valve. And yes, it will not be as easy to clean as a carboy or bucket. With all those things said, I'm trying to take that into consideration while I'm buildi...

Re: racking arm
I think I might consider going with a CPVC elbow, if I wanted to get more beer out. The cone is pretty narrow down there, how much beer do you think you'd lose? I don't really know how much I'd lose. I guess my main problem is that I don't really know how far up the yeast is going to be up the cone...

RE:Priming sugar
Ok, first back up and explain you process up to the point where you added the priming sugar. More info is needed to understand what's going on. I've never seen fermentation start back up as soon as you add priming sugar. If you haven't bottled it now, I'd just wait and start over or you may not get ...

Racking arm
Hmmm, alright. Maybe I wont need one then. I don't really have an idea where the yeast/clear beer level is going to be at in the conical. It may just take a few batches to see where it ends up. I did see some valves with rotating racking arms that you could purchase, but man they were expensive! One...

Racking arm
Hey Slo, any ideas on how far the inside racking arm on your buddies conical was from the bottom of the cone?

Over carbonation
If your beer is over carbonated, you'll have to take it out of the fridge and let it warm up. As it warms up, the CO2 will be release out of the solution, then just let the pressure out of the keg and start over. 30 psi for a week? At what temperature was this at? If your getting wild, foamy...

re:Weldless Valve
Shaggyt, I'm doing the same thing. I've pieced a valve and a drain tube inside the kettle. I'm using just regular rubber O-rings from my hardware store. The kettle is only going to get to boiling temperature and no higher, 212F depending on where you live. The rubber should hold up to those temperat...

Galvanized Steel
Shaggyt, I ran into the same problem in finding SS washers locally. I ended up using galvanized in my mash tun.....and my hair hasn't fallen out yet. Surprisingly, I could not find much information about galvanized metals and food safety. I did see some older non-beer related forums saying...

Harvest
From what I understand, when they feel papery, then it's time to harvest and dry them. As far as how many times you harvest is up to you. In general, they won't all be ready at the same time, so you could do more than one harvest. In commercial growers, I think they just typically do one harvest, in...

re:Bines per plant
Yeah, I was kinda thinking 5-6 bines myself. As of right now I only have 1 string per plant and I'm not sure how crowded that will be. I may try it anyway just to see what happens, then change it if I see fit.
