Thanks Mike
Indeed we have soft water, and I don't think there is any Chlorine used in the treatment of it, we live in a village of about 300 people in N.Z. and are fortunate enough to have this fine water supply, previously water was "caught" in tanks fed from rain fall, dew, snow etc, so we have mov...

Hop cones V pellets in a brew
Anyone out there in homebrew world got a foolproof method of changing weight of hop cones to weight of hop pellets in a brewing calculation, as the weight of pellets if used at the same level as cones seems to be far to bitter, does something happen to the hops as they are processed into pellets?, I...

I have often contacted local breweries and had favourable reception, show some interest and mostly the response is good, some info about transporting the yeast from brewery to your brew site, clean and sanitise a vacuum flask of suitable size, fill the flask with ice, preferably crushed, as you get ...

Phil Mill, pros and cons
Bought mine ages ago, well made, but if you use the manual drive system, ie turn it by arm, milling any decent amount of grain will take several minutes, and to mount it on a bench and drive it with a power drill is not that simple as I've found this past few weeks, the grain "crush" can b...

Thanks Fraoch
Thanks for the input, I'll just have to keep accurate records of what's going in the tun, and measure ph at the same point in the procedure, don't think we have a lot of chalk in our water here in N.Z., we had loads where we lived in U.K., along with a lot of other stuff that got stuck to the kettle...

Fraoch, Scots Honey Beer?
Fraoch, is I believe, a beer brewed in Scotland, with the addition of honey, instead of sugar, so much for not adding sugars to the brew, any way, onto not adding sugars to kit beers, I won the New Zealand homebrew national trophy, Best in Show,(2001) with a Coopers Stout kit, made at double strengt...

Caustic cleaning
Anyone out there point me in the right direction here, how many ounces of caustic soda pearls should I add to each gallon (imperial) of water (or could be Grammes/Litre) to clean my copper, and having just read about some of the other brewery cleaners now available I'll not be getting any more caust...

I have used Papazian's books and found them satifactory, but I also use some books by a gentleman named Graham Wheeler, he writes for the U.K. Campaign for Real Ale, with a Mr Protz, the editor of Whats Brewing, or he was, and there are several books available from Brewers Publications, covering dif...

Phil mill adjustment
Sorry I know this is a bit late on for a reply, I was searching for mash tun info and found this thread, I have a Phil Mill which I noticed was crushing and tearing the grains, when I looked at the knurled roller the teeth were loaded with grain particles, I cleaned these away and the resulting crus...

temp / ph of mash
Thanks for your words of wisdom Eric, so can I take it that a sample of wort should be cooled to the calibrated temperature of the ph meter, before a ph reading is taken, can't get a true reading at mash temp (65c), am I correct? Thanks again Nigel.
