DIY Fitting

It seems like every time I start a plumbing project, I have a similar problem of matching up different threads. It usually means your doing something that wasn't meant to be. I don't know where you would get a hybrid fitting like that, but for the price of a drill and a tap, you could probably make ...

PBW Alternative?

I have had great results cleaning my plastic coni lately with PBW; the only problem is that it's adding almost $10 to my cost-to-brew. I'm paying about $10 per lb for the stuff. Is there a "generic" version, or an alternative chemical that produces similar results?/

Hello Again!

It's been a while since I visited the hop vine; I'm glad to see everyone is still actively brewing. I've been on hiatus from brewing as I am accustommed to (since my little one came) but now I am back into the rythym. I had some horrible luck with a few batches this last summer, but I got a handle o...

Minibrew 2nd

I'm with you Bill. I have three minibrew conicals. I also have a hell of a time in the summer, but I have a long term solution and also an interim one; I'm starting on my garage next spring, and I plan on building an underground block room that I can keep at ale temps all summer. If I don't get done...

Recipe Kits

Partial mash brewing is extract brewing (like you are doing now), with the addition of specialty grains to enhance flavor/color/mouthfeel, etc. My suggestion to you is to check out a few websites that sell recipe kits. When I used to partial mash brew, I bought alot of kits from www.beer-wine.com. T...

Word Up!

I came to this realization after two batches of crappy beer. I brew 12.5 gallons at a time (works good with a 15 gal coni) and I found that I am the most successful with three packages of dry yeast in a 1500ml starter (w/ oxygen, magnetic stirring, and the works). I second your warning to new homebr...

Memory Sparked!

I do believe that I have had the Pyramid Apricot Ale. In fact the dried apricot probably reminded me of that beer subliminally. Barry Manilow & Apricots?? The only way I could use those two terms in a sentence is " I stuffed apricots in my ears so I wouldn't have to listen to Barry Manilow" or " I w...

Apricot Beer?

I was munching on some dried apricots yesterday (trying to lose weight without reducing beer consumption) and I was very pleased with the complexity of their flavor. They had a resinous, almost hoplike character. I'm not a fan of fruit beer, but a light apricot beer sounds good. Anyone ever try??

SA Light

Yeah...it seems a little watery, but compared to macro lights its ambrosia. I won't buy it again, because I never buy light beer, but I wouldn't mind brewing a beer that would help reduce the lump above my waist. Slimfast lager anyone??

A little known fact...

While visiting kinfolk in Florida a year ago, I went to EPCOT center (great for a world beer tour). I was lucky enough to be involved in a Sam Adams tasting event (they were chowcasing the new weizen before they released it). Anyway, and this is right from the horse's mouth, Sam Adams was apparently...

Magnetic Stirrer Mishap

Well it happened.... Despite the warnings, I continued to use yeast starters prepared with my magnetic stirrer with a normal airlock. I heard a loud noise in my "beer room' last night. Wen I went to investigate, I found that the fermentation was so active that it lifted the lid off of my 15 gallon f...

Thanks!

Very gracious of you Jeff, but my testimony was unsolicited; Beertools has helped me develop as a brewer, and I hope it can help other folks.

Put in a good word

I registered and put in a good word for beertools on Google. It's good to know that your getting a little exposure out in the nether regions of the web. If you fishing for memebers, you may want to consider placing banners in places like google. In the meantime, it is up to us, the core group of bee...

1) I found my local guy from word of mouth advertising; my web suppliers through search engines. 2) Yes, I would go to a brew shop on a side street, but I'd be pissed if I had to carry 50# of grain to the main street because of limited parking. 3) I hate driving, I would pay more at your shop just s...
