O.G. Not as expected
I just made a batch of XX-style beer from a recipe kit by Brewers Best. I was actually impressed witht the kit. It contained crystal malt, rice solids, Plain Amber LME, Light DME, bittering hops and finishing hops. (As well as yeast, caps, priming sugar and grain bag). I followed the directions to t...

Verdict
Well, I sent an email to my supplier and he said this is normal due to the molasses. After 2 weeks it was still at 1.020. I bottled it today. What I am still wondering is does the molasses stop the remaining fermentables from fermenting? In other words, without the molasses you would expect a F.G. t...

Don't know
I used the packet of yeast that came with the EDME Red Ale. But I normally use Muntons gold. If what you are saying is true, I'm going to end up with just over 3% alcohol content. Thats with 4 lb. of hopped extract and 3 lb. of unhopped. Not exactly what I was after. Hmm. I was going for a full-bodi...

The same
I checked it on Friday (after one week) and it was 1.020. I checked it again saturday and it was still 1.020.

Original reading
The only other reading I have taken was the initial reading before pitching (1.046).

Update
I took two readings, 24 hrs. apart and the gravity didn't move any discernable amount. Now what?
Thanks,
Brian

Final gravity Q.
Hi, I have a batch in the works. It contains 4 lb. of EDME Red Ale, 3 lb. of Muntons Extra Light Dry and .75 lb. of molasses. The starting gravity was about 1.047. After one week it's only down to 1.020. So I racked it off to get rid of the sediment and put it back on the fermenter. Does this sound ...

More info
Tom,
Thanks for the tips. I do have a hydrometer. It started at 1.042 and finished at 1.014.
By partial mash, I assume that means using all unhopped malt extract w/grains and hops added in?

A few newbie questions
Greets, I recently finished my first batch since graduating from Mr. Beer. The batch was as follows: 5 Gallon batch 3.3 lb. Tripel Extract 2 lb. Muntons Plain Amber DME .75 lb. Maltodextrine All in all, it came out pretty good. I would campare it to a commercial "light" beer. Light flavor ...

The beer
The closet could be as high as 80 degrees but is probably closer to 75. The beer was just some stuff I had left over. I wasn't shooting for anything in particular. 3.3lbs of Tripel hopped LME and 2lbs. of Muntons Plain Amber DME and 1lb. of "Maltodextrin" (Mr. Beer calls it Booster). Brian

Bill,
I believe the temp is at around 75-80. The S.G. reading was 1.014 this morning.
Thanks!

Update
Steve, I took a reading this morning (Tuesday) and it's at about 1.014-1.015. Started at 1.042. I burned my nose hairs when I smelled it. Plenty of C02 I'm guessing. Also, it may be a little warm in the closet where I have it. Would it do any good to move it to a cooler location or is it too late fo...

Thanks!
Tom, Thanks for the detailed answer. I guess I never realized that the all-in-one kits were just that. I have always done 2-gal batches with about 3 lbs. of fermentables. 1.5 lbs of hopped malt and 1.5 lb. of unhopped. Then I would throw some lemon zest and juice in the wort while boiling (I like a ...

Fermenting
Another newbie question. I just graduated from a Mr. Beer kit (don't laugh) to using a 6 gallon bucket complete with airlock! The first day or so the airlock was going nuts. After the first 24-36 hrs. the bubbling has pretty much stopped. Is this normal?
