I'm not a BTP user (STILL waiting for a demo..) and as such I don't know how the efficiency is handled, BUT there is Mash efficiency and there is Total System Efficiency. MASH efficiency will not apply to extracts as Bill said, but total system efficiency also takes into account the water losses fro...

Re: More on Mr. Malty calculator

I'm all out of smack-packs right now, so I don't know and can't recall what info is provided on them; they require a starter. On the other hand, I have a vial of "White Labs Pitchable Liquid Yeast", and it does NOT require a starter because the directions state to just add it to a 5 gallo...

I mentioned it in the other thread regarding it as a feature for BTP. I think it would be an awesome addition to any package. I got to it through The Brewing Network. The forum over there is great and the I love the podcast as it goes well with my 40-minute commute. If you haven't checked it out alr...

The calculator on Mrmalty is awesome. I've used it since he put it up there and I live by it now. My starters are better, they don't ferment out and waste the stores the yeast have built up, they just grow more yeast. He gives the math on his site and it is not difficult to know how many cells you w...

Re: No takers huh?

Just think of it as explaining what the process is with 2 carboys. I just need to understand length of secondary fermentation, environment of it and how does cold conditioning fit into the equation. Thanks everyone. Wottaguy has a LOT of good points, BUT you're just starting out and I assume lookin...

You may be able to save your self the money and ask your water provider (if you don't have one ignore this suggestion.) for a water analysis report. Most water providers do tests every month and provide the results free of charge. Many are online and contain the information needed for the BTP water...

Re: Thanks, 'JP'

I've checked it out; has the same 'yeast cream' instructions, which I guess is where BTP got that info. Temp range is 59F to 75F. I always try to keep my fermenters as much under 70F but above 65F as I can -- using evaporative cooling when necessary. Cheers. Bill Velek I've always heard that you sh...

Re: Max water in brew pot for extract brewing - Newbie ?

I am very green to brewing in general and starting with extract kits to understand before moving to all grain. I've got all the equipment to start mashing (1/2 barrel's) but setup for 5-10 gal batches. Most of the extract kits start with just a couple gals of water and assumed there was no reason I...

I just signed up to this forum for two reasons: 1 - I've heard it touted on other forums and am always looking for good folks to talk to about making all of our beer better. 2 - I wanted to give my 2 cents about a trial version. I use Beersmith now. I used to use Promash. I switched after the trial ...
