Just worrying....

Worried about evap rates....got a four gallon pot, end boil volume (per slothrob's recipe calcs) is 3.5 gallons. I'm assuming the grains will absorb up to half gallon, as I examine his recipe, and mash out with a half gallon, then sparge with 2 gallons. My fermenter holds 2.5 gallons (lus or minus h...

[quote="BillyBock"]lgtg, here's a few thoughts for your consideration: 1) Not all LME is created equal. Some brands are more dextrinous than others (Laaglander for example is 50% fermentable) that'll leave your beer with a higher final gravity, lowering your hop balance and your ABV. 2) No...

I'm using WL Irish Ale (forgot the number) Yeah, I won't mind a little extra sweetness but I could add most of the 60 hops to balance, what do you think? I recall the high IBU you had at 1oz 60 and 0.5oz 30, how could I adjust (sensably) with out sending the IBU's above 45ish? (style limits?) Also, ...

65% is what I messed around with when trying Beer Smith

Looks like Beer Tools does a fine job. I can't thank you enough for your trouble slothrob, yoodaman! I was getting some anxiety over this, seeing what you've done will give me some research to look at and break it down. I really, really appreciate it. I'll keep you posted on the progress. I bottled ...

I'm sorry slothrob....!

I was running around tonight. You were correct in assuming 0.5lb oats. I might be inclined to use 0.75lb but I will just sit back and review your findings. I can't thank you enough man. I will follow up after reading....

I was talking about....

[quote="slothrob"]While the alchohol level is about right for a Dry Stout, the FG is more like what you would expect from an Oatmeal Stout. It would be a bit sweet, but not unlike some stouts. The coffee isn't going to add any unfermentables, but the chocolate might, I don't know. The Choc...

Why is it a problem?

Maybe I missed something along the thread but my "light" research on this style is showing that the ABV is something like 3.2% to the middle fives. Beer Judge Cert Program - http://www.bjcp.org/styleguide16.html/ If I understood you OG and most recent reading (1.018)? your sporting in the ...

Sorry man, I thought you were talking about a Mr Beer fermenter, after re-rading your post I realize that you were talking about the Beer Machine. I just bottled a partial grain\extract stout last night and I have tested a few ounces from the tap on the machine, to say the least, it's not the device...

Thanks Ben...

I'm actually using a Beer Machine, it's equipped with an air tight closed system. It has an air release valve that acts as an air lock. The air release valve is nestled in to the "cap" to the keg which screws onto a cup like fixture with a cloth or cardboard like disk set inside to keep fo...

Slothrob, Thank you very, very much. I will do a quick conversion of your ouce ratio to millileters to see if I lined up with your recommendation. Thanks for the future tip as well. Someone tried to convince me that what I was seeing was not really carbonation but I couldn't really believe that as I...

Over Primed?? (long)

Hello Everyone, I used my Beer Machine fermenter for a partial grain\extract recipe the LHBS guy prepared. It was a Stout that he specially weighed out to meet the Beer Machine's 2.5 gallon volume. I experiemented a little bit as the fermenter has a pressure gauge on it and at six days the air relea...

emergency hop question!!!

Making half batch tonight, grains are steeping on way to boil. Directions say to add 2oz boiling hops, after 30 add 1 oz finish hops. This was for a five gl batch. I have two packs of pellets, Williamette (making a stout) do NOT want to over hop here, I know to make the half batch it would be half o...
