Marley

Although I don't plan it this way, I almost always end up throwing some Bob Marley & the Wailers in the CD player when I'm brewing. "Room to Roam" by the Waterboys usually makes its way into the rotation too.

Another book

John Palmer's book How to Brew has a good discussion on the merits of secondary fermenation. It's free on the internet: http://www.howtobrew.com However, it's good enough that you'll probably want to pick up a hard copy and help him earn a little dough.

Thanks, gentlemen

I didn't use a starter, but will use one for my next batch. I didn't aerate the batch when racking it to the secondary. The gravity was only down to 1.032 today. I'm starting to feel like I'll be lucky to get it down to 1.025 or so. Live and learn. Thanks to both of you for the help.

Fermentation question

I brewed a batch of robust porter recently and achieved an OG of 1.058 with an intended FG of app. 1.012. After over 48 hours in the primary, it was showing no signs of life. I pitched a new vial of yeast, and fermentation took off within about 5 hours. It fermented pretty vigorously for about 24 ho...

water and ice

I usually submerge my brewpot in a sink or bathtub full of ice water. The cold water usually cools it to about 75 degrees in 30 to 40 minutes or so. I leave the lid on to keep out bad stuff but tilt it just a bit to let some hot air escape and speed the cooling.

Right

Who knows? Maybe I'll create a whole new style. It's bubbling away and I'll find out in a few months. Thanks

Trappist vs. Belgian Strong Yeast

Yesterday, I brewed a batch of Belgian Strong Ale. Only after starting the batch did I realize that I bought the wrong yeast for the style. Instead of Belgian Strong Ale yeast, I wound up with Wyeast Belgian Trappist High Gravity Yeast, which Wyeast describes as follows: Robust top cropping yeast wi...

Beautiful

I'm thinking about hiding fresh hop plugs in various locations throughout my house, but I have a feeling my wife would catch on quickly and force me to round them up.

I do

I brewed two batches of beer using buckwheat as the primary ingredient. Also, in addition to Rogue's Buckwheat Ale (which also contains barley), a small brewery in Belgium makes a beer (Sara Ale) using buckwheat as the only grain. If you want to send me an e-mail, I can give you details on my two ba...

Guinness-shake

Although I haven't tried it yet, I've heard that pouring a Guinness over a couple of scoops of coffee ice cream in a glass makes a pretty mean dessert.

Meaningless Newbie Comment

I've brewed all-grain batches, but I've been using weird grains for my wife, who can't have barley. I'm preparing my first personal all-grain batch today and bought and milled my barley at the shop today. Even though it was a bit warm in my neck of the woods, I found myself driving home with the win...

Try this

http://www.bobbrews.com/bobkits.html has a "Rio Grande Cerveza." Although I've never used the Mexican kit, I did make Imperial Stout using the kit from this shop and it was good.

Got it.

It seems the only way I get anything done these days is on sheer luck.

P.S. I'm glad to hear someone is still out there. ;-)

Is this thing on?

Where is everyone? Are you all at the post office mailing the income tax returns? Anyhow, I just thought I'd follow up on an inquiry I made a while back: whether wort can be kept overnight. I did it, apparently without any problems. Making an all-grain batch, I prepared my wort on a Sunday night and...

Congratulations

My five-year-old daughter and 18-month-old son are fascinated by the brewing equipment. Plus the boy absolutely loves a drink of beer. However, young kids in the house definitely make homebrewing a challenge. I wind up doing all of my work after they're in bed for the night. It makes for some late n...
