The best way to step up to using grains
Welcome to Beer tools. The best way to step up to using grains is to start easy. You can start by using 1/2 lb. crushed Crystal and 1/2 lb. crushed cara-pils. Put the crushed grains in a muslin sack, tie it off, and soak it in one gallon 155F water for 30 minutes. Then using a collander, drain the g...

White Labs Liquid Yeast
Hi everybody ... My distributor WILL not carry white labs yeast anymore because they have screwed up their quality control. He did an experiment and found that they had way less active yeast cells than they claimed. He has started to supply Wyeast 125 ml smack pack (the big boys), and I used one thi...

Brewpub Dislikes
Dislikes: 1.) A poor selection of beer offering types / styles (only offering 3-4 types of beer is OK as long as they are really different, but offering 3 light or dark ales does not satisfy everyone). I like seeing 6 brews on tap minimum. 2.) Too much cigarette smoke. I like frequenting California ...

Let's assume that you do in fact want to make a 5 gallong batch and it is going to be a lager, you'll need 9 lbs. base malt (IE: Pilsen / Munich) and 1 pound of the medium ?...

Should be OK, but try it first
Mackie, Clean a racking tube, and extract some out and taste it, I think you should be OK. don't worry about the "mildew" it is probably hop seeds ... You did not specify what you made so I am assuming an Ale, I have left ales in the carboy for 6-8 weeks, and lagers for 3 months and everyt...

Hydrometer reading
Hi, and welcome to beertools.com The only REAL way to tell if your beer is done fermenting or stuck is to take a hydrometer reading. Carefully remove the float part of your air lock (if you have a three piecer) using a piece of adhesive tape, and then slowly remove the the lid and scoop out one cup ...

Dave, Welcome to the forum
We're glad to have you join, I have not had good luck with smack packs. The problem that I have had with Wyeast is that the smack packs can varry a lot from one batch to another. My recommendation is to find out if WhiteLabs Liquid yeast is available in your area, this variety of yeast (to me) is fa...

Sterilizing vs. sanitizing
Loot, You have touched on a very subjective topic. We have all asked the same question at one time or another in our brewing experience. First you need to understand that sanitizing is not the same thing as sterilizing. Although they may sound the same they are not. Sanitizing means to make clean, s...

Type of fermenter
Guys, What I found out too, is that when using a plastic (food grade) primary fermenter, the lid may let some off gasing out if it is not very tight, and this would cause a lack of air lock activety but still be fermenting. My first bucket lid didn't fit tight at all I didn't get any air lock active...

My suggestion is ...
Goose, If you make the Best Bitters, let it age 4 weeks after bottling, and it gets even better with age from there, use no more than 3/4 cup corn sugar for priming, with a full 5+ gallons OK? this one doesn't need to be overly carbonated ... I usually shoot for 5.5 gallons in the primary, yielding ...

Most of todays malts are well modified with the minor exception of 6 row which requires step mashing to aid in the conversion (acid rest, protien rest etc ...). If you use a quality 2 row pale or pilsner, or munich, or vienne malt with less than 20% of specialty (crystal malts) you will be in good s...
