Keep On

Ed,

You brew it, you like it. That, in my opinion, makes you the winner!

Using Chinook

Been using Chinook pellets (11.9%) for the past half dozen batches - seems fine to me. Switched off from Bullion which was about the same Alpha, but the Bullion gives a higher "pucker" factor.

Ah, Barley

Fitz, Some twenty years ago my late father-in-law sublet some land in Prince Edward Island, Canada for... Yup, a farmer to grow barley. Easier to grow than weeds and better looking, too! If I knew then what I know now :) As far as the hops? I vote with Rolling Rock on this one - the pellets work jus...

Hope Ahead

John, I was watching NECN (New England Cable News) earlier this evening and looks like we might hit 40 by Thursday. Brewing indoors tomorrow (Sunday) and at this rate won't move outside until May or June :) Anyway, wife doesn't mind the smell - her sister is a different story so I call my brew "...

A hint

I was reading the directions for making bread and the suggestion was to use beer in place of water - there was an emphasis on porter and stout. Tried two loaves with a homebrew IPA and it came out quite good.

Guess you can have your beer and eat it, too.

The beginnings of a Summer Ale. This will be an extract brew and I'm waiting for a Blond Ale to bottle condition before going on to some recipe additions. This recipe right now stands at: 7 lbs extra light liquid extract (Muntons) 1 lb extra light dry extract (Muntons) 1 oz Cascade 5.3% pellets at 6...

Stopped using it

I was putting maple syrup in my Extract brews 15 minutes to go in the boil. No problems w/taste, etc. What I did find was that it would give me a headache - switched out the syrup for brown sugar and the problem was gone. This, by the way, was done by consuming similar quantities. Paul A bad homebre...

Try this

If you can locate a copy of "Homebrew Favorites" by Lutzen & Stevens there is a recipe for Irish Red Ale on page 35. Although the book was published in 1994 both HBS's that I use have it in stock. If you can't locate a copy then e-mail me at: pauljconley@aol.com and I'll send the recip...

Happened to me, too!

As it turns out this problem did not happen to me until I got my own fridge. I'd try leaving them in a warmer place for a couple of weeks and see if the yeast has "awakened". If not, you can read down a few messages to see what others have done or you can mix some flat beer with carbonated...
