Re: Blending & Bottling Sour Ale

I've heard of people shaking a sample to knock the carbonation out, since the bubbles will form on the hydrometer and affect the apparent gravity. I've never tried it myself, though.

Re: Blending & Bottling Sour Ale

Thanks for the update! If you ever get a chance to test the FG of the re-fermented blend, I'd be interested to know that, too.

Re: hop tea suggestions

I don't know of any hops that are not bitter, though you can see there relative bitterness by looking at their %aa (% alpha acid). The lower the %aa, the less bitter, so hops at 12%aa will be very bitter and at 3%, less so. One thing you may be able to find are aged hops, that have lost much of thei...

Re: BeerTools 2.0.18 in French: units problem

You may want to file a support ticket (see Support in the menubar, above), so that it comes to Jeff's attention more quickly. You can probably make the description brief and point him to your detailed posts, here.

Re: switching to laptop

Also, you will need to copy your library files to your new laptop in order have your saved recipes and personalized settings available. If you don't know how to do this you should be able to find the info easily by searching the forum. If not, just come back and I or someone else will tell you how....

Re: switching to laptop

If you go to My BeerTools, in the menubar at the top of the page, then go to Downloads, you'll see where you can download a fresh copy onto your laptop. It will indicate something like 1/4 to indicate how many of your download limit have been used and you'll need to contact Jeff through the Support ...

Re: My brew day woes continue

Grain potential will vary between lots and types, but a reasonable average number is 79.2 gravity points per kg. So, you have a potential of 79.2 points/kg x 5.62 kg = 445 total gravity points Preboil, you had 28L x 1 gallon/3.785 L x 42 points/gallon = 310 points 310.8/445 = 0.698, or 69.8% eff. Ho...

Re: First recipe

Of course the aromatic and biscuit grains will be first ground and then put into infusion can expect to 30 m with the grain bag while maintaining the temperature between 65 ° and 70 ° Hi That should help. There is some weak enzyme activity in those malts, so there is the potential for the starches ...

Re: First recipe

I do not know much about recipes for the style. However, i believe that aromatic and biscuit malts both need to be mashed, or you will have unconverted starch in your beer, which may leave it cloudy.

Re: Volume Tab - Kettle Volume Calculation

Sorry, there isn't a specification, because the volume loss isn't due to evaporation. The volume changes because wort (or water) changes volume as it changes temperature. If you want 13.5 gallons at the end of cooling, you need 14 gallons at the end of the boil, without any evaporation. If it is mor...

Re: Volume Tab - Kettle Volume Calculation

What you are probably seeing is the correction for volume change due to temperature. This correction is made if you have BTP set up with Final Volume@68°F and, Kettle Volume@212F, since you will lose 4% of the volume cooling from 212 to 68°F.

Re: Presidente clone recipe

Is the alcohol level the same between the two versions? Sometimes the reason that a particular beer is more flavorful in one country than another is that one is a bigger beer. That is true of the Caribbean version of Guinness, I've heard. Alternately, the home country beer might be all malt, with th...

Re: Pilsner Mashing Times

You can make a great pilsner with a 60 minute single-infusion mash. Pilsner malt is high in enzymes because it is lightly kilned and tends to convert very easily. Some brewers might choose to mash longer to try and sqeeze a little more efficiency out of the mash, since Pilsners are often mashed at a...
