I did an all-first-wort-hopped beer, and it had very mild bitterness. If I calculated for my usual 80-minute boil, the IBUs were something like 41 -- if I set that to 20 minutes, the calculated value was more like 24 IBUs. It tasted much more like 24 than 41 (maybe even lower than 24) -- so having t...

I don't know about you guys, but those temps also look all wrong to me. Look at the final temps: After decoction, 161.2F Adding 0.95 gallons brings it up to 169.8F Adding 2.87 gallons (of 157F water! ) brings it UP to 170.8F? I think that's what he's focusing on -- it doesn't make sense that the tem...

Whenever I FWH, I make sure that the hops steep in the hot wort for at least 30 minutes (usually longer) before I crank up the boil. When I collect the wort, it's 160-170F, so I just let the hops steep at that temp. Once 30 minutes have passed, then I turn on the burner, and it usually takes another...

From what I've read recently, analysis shows that first wort hops add as many (or a bit more) IBUs as your bittering hops, but the taste is much different. Most people agree that the taste is like 20-min hops, so that's what I use for calculating my first wort hops contribution. I haven't done it in...

Re: Cannot register v1.5 on a Mac
I downloaded version 1.5 today but cannot register with my registration number (purchased May 14, 2008) . I've been careful to type the names/numbers in exactly, but to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks I just downloaded and installed mine, no problem. Did you type in all I and O (letters) instead of 1 a...

Re: re: water
Well, with fly sparging, you don't have to keep liquid over the grain bed when you get near your target volume, but until the last gallon or so, you do. As for which is easier, batch or fly, it really depends on the system. In my system, I've tried batch sparging a couple times and it has taken long...

Re: re: water
...but there is always some runoff you don't collect. There shouldn't be, other than your dead space. Put your dead space in your vessel description, then you can always set your residual volumes to '0'. Any wort you leave behind is a drop in efficiency. You should plan your mashes to drain fully a...
