Discussion
Watch out for stuck mash with Pumpkin
2006-10-13 7:59pm
You know, I was thinking it would happen and damn if it didn't. I had a bear of a time lautering the mash due to all the pumpkin flesh. Good idea to add rice hulls to the grain bill for next time. Or, I would avoid adding the pumpkin to the mash and just cook the pumpkin in with water in a separate kettle (for at least 30 minutes). Then mix with the wort in the brew kettle.
Further thought on mashing pumpkin

After further thought, I think that it would be simpler to drop all the pumpkin into a grain bag and drop this into the mash. This should significantly reduce the chance of a stuck sparge. This recipe has been adjusted to reflect this.
