Coors Raising prices in the UK August 20, 2008 at 10:30pm
Coors, maker of many different types of beer including Carling and Grolsch lagers is raising its prices in the UK. Coors, whose TV ads for Dutch brew Grolsch feature the Schtop catchphrase, blamed above-inflation rises in costs like barley, diesel, metal and energy. Most retailers are expected to pass the hike on to customers.
Mark Hunter, chief executive of Coors UK, Britains second biggest brewer, apologised to customers. He said it came after much deliberation. He added: These are extraordinary times for beer. We are seeing cost inflation of a magnitude that could cripple the UK beer industry. We have battled hard against the current trading environment. But the severity of inflationary increases since the beginning of 2008 significantly exceeded expectations. In February Coors, which also makes Worthington and Caffreys, raised the price of a pint by 4p and warned of possible further increases.

Brewers Trying to Recapture Beer's Appeal December 24, 2005 at 8:00am
PARIS, France: When Heineken opened a restaurant specializing in beer this year on Paris' Champs Elysees, it banned the kind of food typically found in German beer halls. "I tell people here, never sell sauerkraut," says Richard Weissend, director general of Brasseries Heineken. Instead, Culture Biere offers cumin-flavored tortillas and pan-seared prawns in ginger. The restaurant opened in July with the ambitious aim of changing the image of beer in France. Heineken, like other brewers, is trying to figure out how to arrest a decline in consumption of beer in many countries in Western Europe, as imbibers increasingly favor other kinds of alcoholic beverages.
Heineken hopes people will come to its restaurant to eat and will learn that beer is as fine an accompaniment to food as wine. The idea seems to have potential. During a recent lunchtime, the restaurant was three-quarters full with local office workers and nearly all of them were drinking beer. Carlsberg, the Danish brewer, is also trying to win drinkers back from wine. This year it opened a brewery in Copenhagen, the Jacobsen brew house, to develop new types of beer, including seasonal and "experimental" brews. Only 1% of the brewer's total sales are derived from these beers. "But it's growing," a representative says.

Have you had your xanthohumol today? November 15, 2005 at 8:40am
CORVALLIS, Ore. : Hops used to brew beer may have some health benefits but researchers warn against expecting any significant effect by drinking a few cold ones. Scientists at Oregon State University's Linus Pauling Institute have found a class of compounds called flavonids neutralize "free radicals" — rogue oxygen molecules that can damage cells. One of those flavonids, a compound called xanthohumol, is found only in hops. It may help prevent some forms of cancer, researchers say. Some beers already have higher levels of flavonids than others. The lager and pilsner beers commonly sold in domestic U.S. brews have fairly low levels of these compounds, but some porter, stout and ale brews have much higher levels. "We can't say that drinking beer will help prevent cancer," said Fred Stevens, OSU assistant professor of pharmacy and scientist in the Linus Pauling Institute. "When we give the flavonoid to cancer cells, it seems to slow their growth, which is what you want to do for cancer," said Ho, who is also an assistant professor in OSUs department of nutrition and exercise sciences. Although the tiny amounts of xanthohumol found in beer have little preventive value, Stevens thinks it may be possible in the future for drug companies to develop pills containing concentrated doses of the flavonoid.
