Pellet vs. leaf

Post by Radler »

Hi, I have only ever used pellet hops and am now using a different shop which only carries whole leaf. If my recipe called for 1 oz. Hallertau can I use 1oz leaf just as well as pellet or is there some difference I should know about? I would guess not but I would like to be sure. Thanks.

Per given weight, pellets will give you more IBUs in the kettle. Leaf hops will also absorb wort, so this should be factored into your post-volume boil calculation. And for the life of me, I can't remember the rate just now because I'm trying to figure it out for my last few batches. Can anyone chime in on whole leaf absorption rates?
