mead bubbling crazily

What went wrong? Was this supposed to happen? Should I throw it out? What do I do now?

mead bubbling crazily

Post by madmartigan81 »

I decided to try a batch of mead a couple of weeks ago. I put it initially into a plastic bucket, and it bubbled for a few days. After a week, I transferred it to a carboy. The transfer didn't go very well. The siphon kept getting gunked up and sucked a lot of air. Anyway, now it's been in the carboy for about three weeks and the airlock has been bubbling very rapidly the whole time. Like once every two seconds. And it seems like it is carbonating- there are little bubbles going up the side of the carboy like a soda after you open it. I'm not sure if this is bad, but it doesn't show any signs of slowing down and I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.

Sometimes mead does that

We're had mead that also fermented for weeks after racking to the secondary. I wouldn't worry too much. It will run out of sugar eventually. I'm curious though, what was getting "gunked up" in your syphon exactly? Did you have fruit in the primary, and if so, did any fruit pieces make it into the secondary?

I've made a few meads, and it's not uncommon to have the bubbling continue for several weeks. Mead takes a looooooooooong time to fully ferment.

I do believe my wife left her last mead in fermentors for about a year...
