Uses for mashed grains?
Hi guys,
Wondering if there were any productive uses for the grains after they have been used?
I know they make good compost, but what do you do?
Is it safe to give to animals? My dog seemed keen on it!

Mulch
I put my spent grain around my bushes and trees.
How about Bread?
A local brewpub makes a spent grain bread. I'd keep it away from the dog though. My dog got into it once, had a similar texture coming out, unfortunately, because it's high in fibre, he was extremely regular, all throughout the house!!
Not harmful
It isn't harmful to animals, actually the breweries sell if to farmers as cattle feed. If you have an outside dog, it won't hurt him or your carpet. Inside dogs shouldn't be fed anything that may affect their digestion, for obvious reasons. Mulch, compost, bread, all are good suggestions.

Dogs can eat them as long as there is no hops in them. Many animals like the grains. Most livestock farmers will thank you for spent grains, so make a new friend.
I tried a compost pile once (on a farm) and got more than I bargained for... bees, rats, flys, skunks, you get the picture. So, be forewarned.

Mulch or Compost...
You can use spent grain as mulch, but not too much as it is a nitrogen robber. As compost, however, it is excellent because of the amount of bacterial activity it will cause.

Uses for mashed grains?
yes, filler for cows. I put 18 lbs out where I could watch it. never saw squirrels or birds touch it. I think there is no/little food value in it.my 2

Used grain bread
love the sound of this - bread making is one of my fav things aside from making [and drinking brews] all yeast related i guess
i am supposing that it is just a matter of adding some of the grains to the dough mix - but if anyone has tried this before and has something like a recipe i would love to see it
