When to strain?

When to strain?
If I'm doing a pale ale and using extract, a pound of Crystal in a bag, and using pellets, is it neccessary to strain the wort into the primary? I'm a relative newby, learning from books and there doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule. Under what circumstances is it absolutely necessary or at least strongly advisable to strain the wort?

dont worry
NO, dont worry about straining the wort, I have been brewing for 5 years and have never stained my wort. Hope this helps
Thanks guys!
I ran into a couple of passages in some books that said something like, "after you strain the wort into the primary fermenter...". That concerned me. I had visions of hunks of 'matter' swimming around my Pale Ale. I now know if I'm careful with my siphoning I should be OK.
