Aluminum Pot galvanic corrosion - ruined?

I stored my copper immersion wort chiller in my aluminum brewpot for over a year and when I next went to use it I found it lhad arge black spots had developed and some pits. Can I still brew with this or have I ruined it?

Depending on how bad the pitting is, I've read that you might be able to sand it out.
