I brew in my apartment. I am fortunate enough to have a propane burner so I brew outside on the porch. Yes there is a fairly strong smell, but I promise you will LOVE it. Or soon learn to love it. Your wife, on the other hand...
Can't brew any lagers, not enough space for a spare fridge, but if you want a clean flavor for a summer brew use a California Ale yeast and use the "wet towel" trick.

That's a tiny little space, especially once you consider that it's filled with stuff for two people. I still manage to brew all-grain. The smell is a very pleasant grainy sweetness that invariably makes me have to have a beer.

If your apt has an electric stove you could be in for some trouble.Boiling large volumes of wort for long periods is not an electric stoves cup of tea!

I am not allowed to brew in the dorms where I live
because alcohol is banned. However I have managed
for several years. The smell is very nice, just like baking
something sweet. The smell is not one that most people
associate with beer. so don't worry if that is your
problem. otherwise the neighbors should love it.
If you have problems just send over a six pack or two.
